Big Orange Sunday

On this week’s Big Orange Sunday, Coach calls the Vols’ 34–6 win over Kentucky one of the best-coached games he’s seen since he got to Knoxville in 1980. He says it’s the kind of game you’d show at a coaching clinic, and the field-position chart is his proof. Kentucky started six of its 11 drives at its own 25, and four more inside its own 20. Tennessee made the Wildcats grind out 9-, 12- and 14-play drives just to get two field goals and a punt. The stats back him up: 240 rushing yards, zero turnovers, three takeaways (five if you count two fourth-down stops), four sacks and ten tackles for loss. Matthews singles out linebacker Arion Carter (10 solo tackles, 4 TFLs), praises Jim Knowles for moving Jeremiah Telander to edge rusher, and says second-year corner Redmond is becoming one of the best cornerbacks he’s seen at Tennessee. His big lesson is discipline. After a first half full of penalties, Tennessee had just one five-yard flag after halftime and scored on four of five second-half drives for 24 points. In his “Sunday morning thoughts,” Matthews says the off week fixed the mistakes from the South Carolina loss, and he credits the new starting guards for the jump in the run game. He’s most excited about the two-quarterback plan. George MacIntyre (9 of 14, 125 yards) is managing games better every week from the pocket, while Faizon Brandon’s running package gives defenses something different to prepare for. Matthews says the flip pass to Matthews for a touchdown was “a beautiful call” that’s really a run play. He also points out what was likely a first: both starting quarterbacks at Neyland were from Middle Tennessee. He closes with a scouting report on Texas A&M, coming off a 17–9 loss to South Carolina. His keys: win field position again, keep their mobile quarterback in the pocket, take advantage of A&M’s penalties and coverages that are easy to read, and stay calm in a loud road stadium. He expects Tennessee to move up in Tuesday’s playoff rankings, but says the only thing that matters now is A&M.

Coach breaks down Tennessee’s next opponent, Texas A&M, using the Aggies’ 17-9 loss to South Carolina as a guide. Tennessee just played South Carolina too, so that game shows a lot. Points will be hard to come by. A&M has struggled to move the ball all year and kicked three field goals without scoring a touchdown in that loss. The game plan he lays out mirrors the win over Kentucky: make A&M drive the length of the field, lean on the kicking game, and don’t help them with penalties. On defense, the key is containing A&M’s mobile quarterback, No. 11, a Middle Tennessee native he compares to South Carolina’s Sellers. Tennessee wants to force him to win from the pocket. A&M’s one-back, open sets should give Tennessee chances to blitz, but he warns about their tight-end shifts. On offense, he says A&M runs a four-man front, plays a lot of man coverage and does little to disguise it, but it shifts its front the way Georgia did. That brings back Phillip Fulmer’s old road rule for linemen: “poise for the noise,” and don’t jump offsides in a loud stadium. He expects play-action seam routes to the tight ends and calls this a good matchup for Tennessee’s No. 11 package. He then turns to the College Football Playoff rankings coming out early this week. Tennessee was No. 13, and several teams ranked above them lost, including No. 12 Ohio State, No. 10 Ole Miss, No. 9 BYU and No. 6 Kentucky, which Tennessee beat. He thinks the Vols should climb four or five spots. Still, he says the only thing that matters now is Texas A&M, a tough road trip in a league full of them. After a sponsor read for American Home Design (26% off, no payments until 2028, now with locations in Knoxville, Chattanooga and Johnson City), he closes by saying Tennessee controls its own destiny and promises to recap the A&M game next Sunday on Big Orange Sunday.

Coach explains his “Sunday morning thoughts,” the habit of looking at a game again the next day the way coaches go back to the film, before reacting. His main point from the Kentucky win is that a solid running game is still essential to winning in this league. Tennessee ran 37 times for 240 yards and three touchdowns, while Kentucky managed 137 yards and no rushing scores. He argues the real total is closer to 38 runs for 264 yards, because the touchdown “pass” from Faizon Brandon to Matthews was really a two-foot flip on a reverse-style run play. He calls it a beautiful call that worked because Kentucky expected Brandon to keep running off tackle behind the two big tight ends. He credits the offensive line’s improvement to the lineup change at guard, and he expects the young tight ends, especially No. 87 Wolf, to get more involved. He calls it the most complete game of the year in all three phases, with excellent play calling on both sides of the ball. The second half, he says, was a teaching lesson in disciplined football. Tennessee had just one penalty, a pre-snap flag, and no drive-killing “selfish” penalties, and it scored three touchdowns and a field goal on five possessions. He praises the punt team, which put three of its four punts inside the 20, and says Neyland Stadium was at its very best. That crowd matters to Josh Heupel after Tennessee lost three of four home conference games last year. He sees quarterback George MacIntyre (No. 12) getting more comfortable each week, protecting the ball and running the offense without close calls on the play clock. He looks forward to seeing how the staff uses MacIntyre’s passing alongside Brandon’s running. He wraps up with a bit of history: both starting quarterbacks were from Middle Tennessee, which he bets has never happened at Neyland. He remembers being assigned to recruit the area in 1982, when Tennessee signed almost nobody from there.

Coach opens Big Orange Sunday calling Tennessee’s 34–6 win over Kentucky one of the best-played games he’s seen since he arrived in Knoxville in 1980. He says it was a “coaching clinic” in how to win, built on General Neyland’s old rule that it’s not who has the ball, it’s where they have it. The field position chart tells the story. Kentucky started most of its 11 drives at its own 25 or deeper, including drives from the 19, 18, 14 and 4, and had to put together 9-, 12- and 14-play drives that ended in only a punt and two field goals. Tennessee had no turnovers and forced five takeaways if you count two fourth-down stops. The Vols also had four sacks, 10 tackles for loss and 240 rushing yards at 6.5 a carry. The biggest change came after halftime: Tennessee drew just one five-yard penalty in the second half and scored on four of its five drives for 24 points. The host sees that as proof the team fixed the self-inflicted mistakes from the South Carolina loss during its off week. He credits the staff for its preparation, Jim Knowles’s defensive game plan and the play calling on game day. On the individual side, he praises linebacker Arion Carter (10 solo tackles, four for loss) and Jeremiah Telander, whose move to edge rusher he calls one of the best position changes he’s seen at Tennessee. He also singles out a second-year cornerback he says is becoming one of the best he’s seen at the school. He then turns to the quarterbacks. George MacIntyre went 9-of-14 for 125 yards and managed the game well. Faizon Brandon, now healthy, is a running threat for short yardage and goal-line plays. The host says both handled the ups and downs of the starting job with class. Speaking as a former defensive coordinator, he argues that having two very different quarterbacks forces Texas A&M, LSU and Vanderbilt to prepare two game plans for the final three games. He expects Tennessee to use more of that two-quarterback package down the stretch, and he’ll dig into it in the second half of the show.

Bill Mayo joins the broadcast to dive into the technical side of football in the trenches. The conversation explores why young linemen struggle with pre-snap penalties and flinching against shifting defensive fronts, using Georgia's defensive tactics as a prime example. Mayo also breaks down the strategic evolution of the running game, comparing traditional gap schemes—like power, counter, and trap—to modern inside and outside zone blocking. Looking ahead to the next matchup, the hosts and Mayo preview the upcoming night game against Kentucky at Neyland Stadium. Mayo highlights Kentucky's current momentum, noting their confident, mistake-free approach to the game. The episode wraps up with a nod to the seamless work of the broadcasting team and a sponsor read for American Home Design's 49th-anniversary sale.

The Vols are coming off an open date and have four games left, and every one of them counts. On this episode of Big Orange Sunday, Coach  brings back an old saying from the 1980s locker room: “They remember what you do in November.” Win out and Tennessee is all but guaranteed a 12-team playoff spot, with a possible trip to Atlanta for what may be the last SEC Championship Game. Lose again, and it’s on to bowl season. Doug is joined by longtime coaching friend Kevin Steele to look at what this team does best: a defense that’s tied for the SEC lead in scoring defense, sure tackling, a pass rush that delivers, and a power running game built around Bishop and multiple tight ends. They also get into what still has to improve, from red-zone touchdowns to the deep passing game that George McIntyre showed at South Carolina. Then it’s on to Saturday night’s showdown at Neyland with the first-place Kentucky Wildcats. Doug and Kevin explain how Kentucky keeps winning with clean, mistake-free football and an aggressive head coach. They cover what the Wildcats’ loss to Alabama showed, how to contain their running quarterback, and why Tennessee will need chunk plays against a defense that’s sure to stack the box. Former Vol offensive lineman and Vol Network broadcaster Bill Mayo joins to talk about the offensive line coming together, why the pre-snap penalties keep happening, how blocking schemes have changed since the I-formation days, and why a loud night crowd at Neyland could make the difference.

We preview the crucial upcoming football matchup between Tennessee and Kentucky. The hosts break down Kentucky's disciplined play, noting their strong top-10 scoring defense and efficient run game, while emphasizing that Tennessee's defense must force them to throw from the pocket. Former Tennessee offensive lineman Bill Mayo joins the conversation to discuss the Vols' recent offensive line improvements and strategic shifts. Mayo shares his thoughts on the team's successful transition to more downfield passing and praises the coaching staff's effective use of multi-tight end formations to keep opposing defenses off balance. Additionally, Coach Kevin shares a story from his very first recruiting trip to visit Mayo in Dalton, Georgia, and outlines defensive strategies for containing Kentucky's rushing attack. The episode wraps up with a look ahead at the importance of minimizing undisciplined penalties and playing freely as the team controls its own destiny for the remainder of the season.

Kevin Steele joins the show to discuss the shifting expectations for Tennessee football, where securing a spot in the 12-team playoff has become the new standard for a successful season. The conversation dives deep into the impressive dominance of the Tennessee defense. Steele breaks down how the defensive unit has drastically reduced mental errors and chunk plays while excelling at run fits, tackling, and edge rushing. On the offensive side of the ball, the coaches highlight the success of a solidified offensive line and a powerful running game that effectively utilizes multiple tight ends to change defensive gaps. However, they also identify key areas for growth as the young quarterback gains experience, specifically noting the need to connect on the deep ball and the importance of finishing drives with touchdowns inside the ten-yard line rather than settling for field goals. Finally, they preview the high-stakes November stretch, starting with the upcoming matchup against the Kentucky Wildcats.

In this episode of Big Orange Sunday, host and former Tennessee defensive coordinator Doug Matthews breaks down the Volunteers' frustrating fourth-quarter loss to South Carolina. Matthews highlights how a lack of discipline and 12 accepted penalties—including infractions that negated three Tennessee touchdowns—ultimately cost the team the game. Despite dropping to a 6-2 overall record, Matthews reminds fans that the Vols still control their own destiny and remain firmly in the hunt for the SEC Championship and the College Football Playoff. Tune in as Coach Matthews discusses the necessary coaching adjustments, the importance of getting the ball to key playmakers, and looks ahead to the crucial upcoming matchup against the Kentucky Wildcats.

The Tennessee Volunteers remain firmly in the College Football Playoff picture despite losing the fourth quarter in their recent matchup. Coaches are using the current off week to get the roster healthy and correct late-game defensive mistakes before hosting Kentucky and Vanderbilt. With true freshmen stepping up and veteran defensive players retaining eligibility under the new five-year rule, the team controls its own championship destiny in the final stretch of the SEC season.

Despite a dominant defensive performance, critical mistakes in the fourth quarter and undisciplined play led to a frustrating loss for the University of Tennessee. The defense recorded five sacks, eight tackles for loss, and one interception, highlighted by standout performances from defensive backs like TJ Metcalf and a 15-tackle showing from Joan Lane. The offense also saw a highly efficient effort from the quarterback, who completed 16 of 23 passes, though three separate touchdown passes were ultimately called back. Ultimately, the game was lost due to poor execution and a lack of discipline in crucial moments. With a seven-point lead and under four minutes remaining, the team surrendered the advantage by failing to make a decisive defensive stop, which South Carolina capitalized on. This was compounded by giving up two critical turnovers on the offense's final two possessions—one on downs and one via a game-ending sack-fumble. Furthermore, the team committed 12 penalties for 90 yards, which included entirely preventable mental errors like kicking the ball out of bounds and fielding a true freshman wide receiver who drew a costly flag. The coaching staff emphasized the immediate need to improve game management and situational readiness to close out tight fourth-quarter battles moving forward.

The Tennessee football team dropped to a 6-2 overall record following a 10-3 fourth-quarter loss to South Carolina. Undisciplined play heavily impacted the team, as 12 accepted penalties negated three touchdown passes and ultimately cost them the game.

Following a major victory, this segment  Coach highlights the crucial role that veteran experience plays in Tennessee's current football season. Despite having a highly touted 105-man roster, the team's true competitive advantage is its abundance of seasoned upperclassmen. The defense alone fields fourteen players who are in their third, fourth, or fifth years of college football, including veterans like Carter, Campbell, and Hobbs. The offense is similarly anchored by experienced seniors, providing the stability and depth necessary to navigate the physical demands of the game. The commentary also addresses head coach Josh Heupel's performance, dismissing superficial criticisms by pointing directly to his 3-2 winning record against the rival Alabama Crimson Tide. Securing victories against Alabama is framed as the ultimate benchmark and number one job for a Tennessee head coach. As the team prepares for a tough upcoming matchup against South Carolina, the commentary acknowledges that the days of easily predicting undefeated seasons are fading. The overall talent pool in the conference is deepening, meaning even top-tier programs will face intense, competitive battles week after week

Tennessee secured a victory over Alabama by relying on a dominant defensive game plan called by Jim Knowles and a strong kicking game that controlled field position. The defense stifled Alabama's offense, holding them to two conversions on 13 third-down attempts and generating four takeaways compared to Alabama's two. After trailing by two points at halftime, Tennessee shifted the momentum early in the second half when T-Lander and Robinson secured a crucial fourth-down stop on Alabama's opening drive. This defensive stand led directly to a Tennessee touchdown, giving them a 19-10 lead and putting them in a strong position to close out the game. Offensively, playcaller Joey Halzle successfully managed young quarterback George MacIntyre against a physical Alabama defense. The offensive production heavily featured running back DeSean Bishop, who took 35 touches over 72 snaps, and wide receiver Mike Matthews, who tallied seven catches for 85 yards. The offense also benefited from strong perimeter blocking by the wide receivers and increased involvement from TK Keys, who caught two passes, and tight end DeSean Brame. Ultimately, Tennessee's ability to protect their young quarterback while defensively overwhelming Alabama's young quarterback, Russell, secured the win.

This Morning Coach Talks About Tennessee's monumental victory over Alabama in a classic rivalry matchup defined by a physical, suffocating defensive performance. He breaks down how the Volunteers completely neutralized a Crimson Tide offense that had been leading the SEC in scoring, holding them to a single touchdown that only occurred on a short 14-yard drive following an interception. The segment highlights the defense's sheer dominance, detailing their five sacks, four takeaways, and crucial ability to cap Alabama's explosive playmaking by limiting their longest run to just 19 yards. Coach also unpacks the offensive game plan, explaining the brilliant strategy to abandon a fast-paced shootout mentality in favor of patient, clock-controlling football that perfectly complemented the defense. He dives into De'Sean Bishop's workhorse performance, carrying the load on nearly half of the team's 72 offensive snaps to protect an inexperienced quarterback. Finally, he analyzes the game-sealing 15-play, 72-yard touchdown drive that drained over nine minutes off the clock in the fourth quarter, proving this 6-1 Tennessee squad has the complete formula needed to contend for a conference championship

On this edition of Big Orange Sunday, former Tennessee Coach  breaks down the Volunteers' hard-fought 24–14 victory over Auburn, highlighting how the team channeled General Robert Neyland’s classic game maxims—playing lights-out defense, dominating the kicking game, and minimizing costly errors. Matthews analyzes head coach Josh Heupel’s pivotal decision late in the second quarter to replace a shaken and tentative Faizon Brandon with backup quarterback George MacIntyre, who provided needed poise and stability after Brandon’s interception led to Auburn’s lone first-half touchdown. Offensively, Tennessee leaned into a bruising ground attack led by running back DeSean Bishop’s workhorse performance (34 carries, 225 yards, 3 touchdowns), while the coaching staff successfully overhauled pass protection by placing tight ends on the line of scrimmage to aid the tackles. Defensively and on special teams, the Vols staged a clinic: punter Jackson Ross repeatedly pinned Auburn deep inside their own territory (averaging 44.2 net yards with five kicks inside the 20), while a swarming defense led by Jeremiah Telander, Arion Carter, and Omari Campbell racked up three takeaways, four three-and-outs, and four sacks. Matthews wraps up the show by evaluating the SEC landscape, reminding listeners that surviving the grueling conference schedule requires unyielding physicality on both sides of the ball.

Coach breaks down a gritty Tennessee victory that hinged on physical play and a dominant rushing attack. Despite a sluggish first half where the passing game struggled—with quarterback McIntyre throwing for only 86 yards and taking three sacks overall alongside one interception—the offense found its rhythm by leaning on running back DeSean Bishop, who racked up 225 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries. The host praises the tight ends' blocking, punter Jackson Ross's strategic kicks, and the coaching staff's commitment to ball protection, noting that leaning on the run game was a necessary adjustment. The broadcast concludes with a look around the conference, highlighting key matchups like Arkansas's loss to Texas A&M and Vanderbilt's defeat at Georgia, reminding fans that navigating an unpredictable SEC schedule requires a relentless, physical approach every single week.

The University of Tennessee's recent performance against Auburn serves as a defensive and special teams clinic, primarily won through dominant field position control. Tennessee's exceptional kicking game repeatedly pinned Auburn deep, forcing them to start five of their offensive drives inside their own 11-yard line. Complemented by a stout defense that forced three takeaways and seven punts in the second half, the Volunteers successfully limited Auburn to just 14 points. Standout defensive efforts from players like Amari Campbell and Arion Carter, combined with effective halftime adjustments to the running game and younger players seamlessly stepping up for injured starters like Moss, ultimately secured the victory

Coach breaks down Tennessee's hard-hitting 24-14 victory over Auburn, highlighting how the team succeeded by adhering to Coach Robert Neyland's classic game maxims. The Volunteers secured the win through a dominant defensive performance and an exceptional kicking game that repeatedly pinned Auburn inside their own 10-yard line. Offensively, the coaching staff made vital adjustments, including using a tight end to provide extra blocking help for the right tackle and executing a pivotal quarterback change late in the first half. After the starting redshirt freshman struggled and threw a costly interception, backup Phaseon Brandon stepped in confidently, perfectly demonstrating the team's philosophy to always be ready when your number is called.

In this episode of Big Orange Sunday, Coach  recaps Tennessee’s hard-fought  loss to top-ranked Texas, breaking down an old-school rock fight defined by elite defense, offensive growing pains, and critical lessons moving forward. Mathews details the statistical reality of a contest featuring 16 combined sacks, 14 punts, and a 24% third-down conversion rate, while analyzing a troubling trend that has seen the Volunteers drop four of their last five home conference games at Neyland Stadium. Focusing on the offensive side of the ball, Mathews scrutinizes Tennessee’s struggles in pass protection against a fierce Longhorns front, where true freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon absorbed 10 sacks and was hit 23 times across 73 offensive snaps. Mathews points to a personnel mismatch at right tackle—where starting guard Perry was forced outside due to the absence of transfer portal addition Orien Williams (#77)—and calls out head coach Josh Heupel, offensive coordinator Joey Halzle, and the offensive line staff for failing to provide adequate schematic help, chips, and protection slides. Despite the barrage of contact, an injury scare that briefly sent Brandon to the medical tent, and a run game held to just 2.9 yards per carry, Mathews lauds Brandon’s poise, toughness, and high upside, drawing comparisons to former Vol quarterback Tony Robinson while recommending Tennessee lean on the 40-second play clock and designed quarterback draws to settle the offense. Defensively, Mathews praises coordinator Jim Knowles and his unit for a masterclass outing, limiting Texas to just 55 plays, forcing seven punts, recording six sacks and 10 tackles for loss, and creating negative plays on 18% of the Longhorns' snaps. Key standouts highlighted include Arion Carter (11 tackles, TFL, fumble recovery, edge containment), Tyree Weathersby (2.5 sacks, 2.5 TFLs), Carson Gentle (five tackles), and Kaelen Lee (interception), alongside a complementary special teams sequence where a pinpoint pooch punt pinned Texas deep, forcing a three-and-out that Qua Moss converted into a punt-return touchdown. Evaluating the game through his four foundational coaching metrics—penalties, turnovers/takeaways, the kicking game, and field position—Mathews emphasizes that Tennessee cleanly won three of the four, proving the Vols "got beat" by execution rather than giving the game away with unforced mistakes. After running through scores around the SEC, Mathews turns attention to next week's home tilt against Auburn, previewing former UT coordinator Alex Golesh’s fast-paced offense and emphasizing the urgent need to expand secondary depth after relying on just 19 defensive and 16 offensive players against Texas.

Coach breaks down Tennessee's recent football game against Texas from his home film study, focusing on key takeaways and silver linings moving forward into conference play. He outlines his four essential winning metrics—penalties, turnovers/takeaways, the kicking game, and field position—noting that Tennessee held strong advantages in the first three. While acknowledging that Texas outplayed them over 60 minutes and earned the victory, he argues Tennessee was "beat" rather than having "lost" the game through self-destruction. Key topics include: Defensive highlights, including holding Texas to just 55 offensive snaps, forcing seven punts, recording six sacks, and creating negative plays on 18% of snaps. Individual standout performances and observations on players like Boo Carter, Arion Carter, Christian Harrison/defensive backs, and Arch Manning's passing execution. Lessons learned for future games, such as potentially using two punt returners, incorporating the quarterback draw, and continuing to develop young depth on the defensive line ahead of their upcoming matchup against Auburn.

Offensive Concerns and Quarterback Development: The host identifies key offensive hurdles, noting a "trifecta" of passing game issues—pass protection, receiver separation, and pocket awareness/timing for the young quarterback. The coaching staff is urged to adjust protection schemes and support the quarterback against pressure as conference play ramps up. Personnel and Looking Forward: A brief look at low offensive and defensive player rotation counts is followed by a preview of the upcoming game against Auburn and former offensive coordinator Coach Golesh's system. Key topics covered include: The Defensive Battle: A look at the dominant defensive play on both sides, which featured a combined 16 sacks, 14 punts, and only 30 total offensive points scored. Offensive Struggles & Pass Protection: Criticism of the offensive performance, specifically the lack of coaching assistance for both an inexperienced quarterback and an out-of-position right tackle facing relentless pressure. Quarterback Evaluation: An assessment of young quarterback Faizon Brandon, noting that despite absorbing 23 hits and 10 sacks, he showed toughness, composure, and immense upside reminiscent of former Vol Tony Robinson. Home Conference Trend: Concern over a disturbing trend in Knoxville, pointing out that Tennessee has now dropped four of its last five home conference matchups. SEC Landscape & Moving Forward: A quick glance around the conference scoreboard and upcoming opponents, emphasizing that Tennessee must lean into its stout defense, establish the running game, and simplify the offense as they prepare to host Auburn.

Coach previews Tennessee’s upcoming high-stakes matchup against the University of Texas at Neyland Stadium, highlighting the historic nature of the regular-season meeting and soaring ticket demand. Mathews emphasizes how head coach Josh Heupel’s key offseason decisions—particularly investing in strength and conditioning and hiring defensive coordinator Jim Knowles along with his veteran staff and players—have dramatically improved the team's fundamentals.

Coach reviews game tape to assess Tennessee's depth chart and identity heading into conference play. Rather than focusing on the flashy skill positions, he breaks down the offensive line, tight ends, and interior defensive line. Despite heavy transfer portal additions limiting snaps for young players, three true freshmen are carving out real roles: interior defensive lineman Finch, wide receiver Keys, and tight end/blocker Mikele Willis. Matthews details the defensive front rotation, which is designed to keep the pass rush fresh for four quarters. He singles out Gilliam, Hobbs, West, Eason, and Campbell, along with versatile edge play from Teelander and Dailey. He also praises the defense's structural discipline and improved zone pass coverage. The linebackers' ability to read quarterback tendencies, a coaching emphasis under coordinator Jim Knowles, will be especially important against high-profile passers like Texas's Arch Manning.

Tennessee wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a workmanlike 42-9 win over Kennesaw State, setting up a demanding nine-game SEC stretch. The Vols cleaned up the sloppiness from the Georgia Tech game, cutting their penalties from 14 for 142 yards to just 3 for 20 yards and avoiding kicking-game mistakes. Transfer kicker Ranveer made two field goals. The defense set the tone coming out of halftime with back-to-back three-and-outs, and the resulting short fields turned into quick touchdowns. Boo Carter and the secondary showed poise and instincts at STAR/nickel, and Carter was aggressive as a returner. Peyton Lewis continued to improve at running back, and the offensive line and run game got a consistent push. Nico Iamaleava was steady, protecting the ball and taking hits without costly mistakes, and designed quarterback runs should stay a key part of the offense. With Ethan Davis injured, the young tight ends stepped up as blockers and receivers. Tennessee now turns to Texas, with both teams entering SEC play after similar tune-up games. Coaching connections (Jim Knowles, Josh Heupel, Joey Halzle and Seth Littrell) should give the Vols useful insight into the Longhorns.
