But just as he was preparing for an opportunity to fight for a world championship, doctors discovered a brain aneurysm, bringing his boxing career to an unexpected end.

For Oscar, losing boxing meant losing much more than a sport. His identity had become wrapped up in being “the champ.” Retirement led to depression, frustration, and a difficult season in his marriage and faith. Through the prayers and faithfulness of his wife—and ultimately through Christ—Oscar began discovering that his real identity was never supposed to rest in championships, accomplishments, or what he could do in the ring.
