Earlier today, the Portfolio Committee for Basic Education has adopted the Basic Education Laws Amendment bill.  The Freedom Front Plus, ACDP and DA voted against the Bill. The ANC and the EFF voted for the adoption of the bill. The bill is making amendments surrounding language policy, the role of school governing bodies, corporal punishment, homeschooling and Grade R becoming the compulsory starting age for schools. Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) bill adopted despite reservations

We find out from Chris Pappas, the Democratic Alliance’s KZN Premier candidate for next year’s election, as his party is hoping to unseat the ruling African National Congress in the province. Pappas is very optimistic about the DA’s chances in KwaZulu-Natal and believes that the prospects of winning the province are high.

Earlier on today, Police minister Bheki Cele and the SAPS leadership briefed the media on recent successes achieved by the police in the fight against crime. During the press briefing Cele said the SAPS continues to respond decisively to crimes linked to critical infrastructure, commercial crimes, stock theft, illegal mining and illicit cigarettes and theft as well as hijacking and smuggling of motor vehicles.
