Beyond the BadgeBeyond the Badge

Lieutenant Craig Martinez, Orem City Police Department

View descriptionShare

Orem Police Lieutenant Craig Martinez put himself in the hot seat to teach families an important lesson about the dangers of children playing or being left in cars in hot weather.

He live streamed his experience sitting in his patrol car in full sun.  The interior temperature went up to 127 degrees.  His heart rate increased by 47 beats per minute (even though he never moved), and and his core temperature went up three degrees.

It was a startling demonstration of how quickly things can get very dangerous for unattended children in hot cars.

Parents sometimes forget small children in the car.  Have something in your car to remind you to check for kids.
