An IRD report today found that New Zealand's wealthiest pay tax at nearly half the rate of ordinary people.

A sample of over 300 wealthy Kiwis (all worth over $50 million) revealed they paid a median tax rate of 9.4 percent.

Treasury data indicates that 'middle wealth' New Zealanders pay a 20.2 percent tax rate.

Infometrics Principal Economist Brad Olsen says no matter what way you cut the figures, middle income earners will be questioning the fairness of this.
