The Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety says it is shocked and angered by new revelations showing that at least 97 SAPS officers have been accused of sexual violence or rape.
These figures come directly from the Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s 2024/25 annual report, released on Friday.
The committee says this conduct is a deep betrayal of public trust, especially because police officers are constitutionally mandated to protect communities — particularly women and children. They’re calling for swift, decisive action against any officer found guilty of misconduct.
Committee chair Bandile Masuku also highlighted another alarming issue:
During recent oversight visits, not a single police station assessed was fully compliant with the Domestic Violence Act. The failures stem from poor administration, missing or incomplete documentation, misaligned record‑keeping, and basic operational weaknesses.
