In this episode, I’m re-airing my conversation with former covert CIA officer Andrew Bustamante, founder of EverydaySpy. My friend Adam Wenguer introduced us by saying Andrew was great at marriage, homeschooling, and biohacking, and that he used to be a spy. You’ll hear what a polygraph really measures, how the CIA rebuilds officers after an operation, and the recovery tools he leans on, including L-theanine, CBD oil (use code BEN15 for 15% off), and watered-down electrolyte drinks (get a free sample pack with any drink mix order).

Andrew walks through his CIA morning routine, from a big glass of water and a Transcendental Meditation® mantra to berries instead of coffee, plus why the agency wants your heart rate up early and why he shuts off screens 90 minutes before bed. You’ll also hear about the two popular sleep aids I think cut into your REM sleep, the “perspective” exercise that changed his marriage, the “false dilemma” that heads off most bedtime fights with kids, and how I talk to my own sons about porn. We also cover why he journals in fragments and turns them into spreadsheet dashboards, and why switching up your workouts beats the same treadmill run every day. If you want to go deeper, you can find his new book,Outsmart Everyone, here.
