Connecting Generations Bangalow is a not‑for‑profit, intergenerational community initiative based in Bangalow, NSW. Its core purpose is to bring young families and older community members together through seasonal events built around creativity, play, music, and shared experiences

These seasonal gatherings are designed to reduce loneliness, strengthen community bonds, and give families without nearby grandparents a sense of extended family. But it's so much more than that.

The next event is being held on Saturday 23rd and Co-founder Ruth Winton-Brown will be joining us for an update.

Our Timeless Threads is a Northern Rivers based not‑for‑profit founded by registered nurse, fashion designer and my second guest on the show Maia Willow.

OTT blends fashion, creativity, aged‑care wellbeing, and sustainability to bring joy, dignity, and self‑expression to older adults.

The OTT shop is at the heart of it all.  A community hub at 18 Acacia St, Byron Bay, selling second‑hand clothing and hosting workshops, tea parties, and planning sessions. It’s recently undergone a massive expansion which means the future is looking bright for our precious elders as it offers all kinds of new opportunities for involvement, connecting young and old, sharing skills, all in the name of restoring dignity and autonomy, not to mention style and grace to our ageing population.

The Byron Coast Times published a front‑page feature connecting Ruth Winton‑Brown (Connecting Generations Bangalow) and Our Timeless Threads (founded by Maia Willow). The article appeared in the 17 April 2026 edition and focused on how both women are reshaping intergenerational connection and aged‑care culture in the Northern Rivers.

On the show, we’re revisiting one of the most talked about plants in global agriculture, the Moringa tree. You may have it growing in your own garden, seen it overseas, heard it mentioned here on Belly a few months ago, or noticed it appearing in conversations about sustainability and traditional cultures. But here in Australia and New Zealand, Moringa sits in a very specific regulatory space.

Moringa has a long, well‑documented history in several regions across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In these places, it’s considered a traditional food plant, deeply embedded in local agriculture and daily life.

In these regions, Moringa is considered a traditional food plant because:
It has been eaten for generations
It has a long, documented history of culinary use
It is part of local agriculture and cuisine
Regulators recognise it as a conventional food, not a novel one

This contrasts with Australia and New Zealand, where:
Moringa has no established history of consumption
FSANZ requires scientific evidence before approving new foods
The recent application for this approval was not successful

All of this means that as of May 2026, Moringa is not permitted to be sold as a food or food ingredient in Australia or New Zealand, following FSANZ’s formal rejection of Application A1294.

It is now treated as a novel food that has not been approved, meaning it can’t be sold as a food, added to foods, or imported as a food.

It can however still be sold as a TGA‑listed therapeutic product (e.g., capsules marketed without therapeutic claims, remain legal), but not as a food.

In lieu of this news, I welcome back to the airwaves Moringa Man. We’ll be sharing a conversation that isn’t about health claims or product promotion. Instead, we’re exploring what Moringa actually is, why it attracts global interest, how it’s used in non‑food contexts, and what the current rules mean for growers, researchers, and curious listeners like you at home.

First, we’ll be speaking with Jo Winwood from the Rotary Club of Byron Bay, an organisation that has been quietly, consistently, and compassionately supporting young people in our Shire for more than three decades, recognising that their physical and mental wellbeing underpins the strength of our future community.

The Rotary has become increasingly aware of the growing challenges facing young people, particularly in relation to body image and mental health. Social media’s having a profound impact on self-esteem, and we’re seeing rising concerns around body dissatisfaction and eating disorders.

Rotary has teamed up with Body Bloom, a progressive high school-delivered program providing young women, parents and carers with the motivational tools to establish confidence, self-empowerment, and body appreciation for prevailing physical and mental health. 

After that, we’ll be joined by Alix Livingstone founding director of Defend the Wild, ahead of a powerful double‑feature documentary screening at the Brunswick Picture House on Sunday May 17th, two films that explore the deep cultural, ecological, and spiritual significance of The Dingo.

Alix is motivated by a desire to address the complex challenges confronting Australian wildlife. With a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to collaborating with various stakeholders on the ground Alix and her team ensure that solutions can be found that benefit wildlife, ecosystems, and communities.

Spearheading the development of Defend the Wild's Dingo campaign, Alix is shedding light on the government-sanctioned treatment of Dingoes across Victoria but the plight to save the dingo is a National one.

Removing Dingoes from Country is causing an ecological crisis.

Alix has more to share when she joins us around 10am.

Two very different conversations, but both rooted in the same idea: when we look after our young people and our Country, we look after our future.
