After a weekend of Dingo festival delights, we kick off the show by welcoming musician Lila Swain (pictured center) and DJ Rahel an event organiser helping make magic happen up at Coorabell Hall every Thursday as part of the Foxy Lu crew. 

They’ll both be in to tell you more about the Speak Easy Jazz night happening this Thursday called ‘License to Play’ and quite possibly convince you to head along and support live music and local goodness.

In the second skunk hour of the show, we’ll have Del Larkin on the Belly hotline, from the band Sunkhour performing this Sunday at the Arts Factory bringing their unique and much-loved sound to the ears and hearts of the Byronshore. In the second hour we’ll continue the interview we started last week in Part 2 with Dr. Corin Storkey (pictured) from Seleno Health.

New Zealand born co-founder and co-director of Seleno Health Corin has over15 years of academic and research experience, specialising in medicinal antioxidant chemistry, oxidative diseases, cellular protection and health. He holds a PhD in medicinal chemistry from the University of Melbourne, and the Heart Research Institute – Sydney. 

He currently leads the New Zealand based Maca and cacao research program in Otago Uni in NZ that studies Andean and Amazonian plant medicines and substantiates their traditions through biochemical analysis. His latest projects include Bean to Brain - substantiating traditional uses of ceremonial cacao by Peruvian shamans through biochemical mapping of active metabolites.

Last week's interview began with us eating some limited-edition Gut Happy chocolate and mapped its progress through the mind and body. Fascinating. We’ll pick up where we left off hearing and learning more about the molecules in Cacoa and how they work within the Endo Cannabinoid System. Particularly Anandamide.

All of that to come this week on Belly splattered with music of a south American flavour to enhance the worded journey to the heart of the Peruvian plains where the focus of the cacao bean originated.

Since 2010, Byron Youth Theatre (BYT) has created youth-led original theatre that provides
young people with opportunities to explore complex social issues through artistic practice.
BYT has delivered 420 performances and 345 workshops, engaging approximately 9,000
young people, teachers, parents and community members across the Northern Rivers.
The organisation’s work has been recognised through the 2020 Way Ahead Mental Health
Association NSW Media and The Arts Award and acknowledged on three occasions in the
NSW Legislative Assembly for its contribution to young people, mental health awareness
and community wellbeing.

With a 16-year legacy of producing impactful, youth-driven theatre, Byron Youth Theatre continues to empower young people and their communities through the arts. It’s latest production ALL OF US promises to be another landmark production, raw, honest, and deeply relevant.

The fabulous Lisa Apostolides will be in to chat more about the work of the Byron Youth Theatre and their upcoming show All of US showing at the Drill Hall Theatre – 15 & 16 October

New Zealand born co-founder and co-director Dr Corin Storkey has over 15 years of academic and research experience, specialising in medicinal antioxidant chemistry, oxidative diseases, cellular protection and health. He holds a PhD in medicinal chemistry from the University of Melbourne, Australia and the Heart Research Institute Sydney, Australia. 

He currently leads the New Zealand based Maca and cacao research program that studies Andean and Amazonian plant medicines and substantiates their traditions through biochemical analysis.

 His latest projects ('Bean to Brain') include biochemical mapping of macamides in different cultivars of Peruvian Maca, comparisons of bioactives in different Maca preparations and substantiating traditional uses of ceremonial cacao by Peruvian shamans through biochemical mapping of active metabolites.

He arrived in the country yesterday to embark on a series of workshops and events and we met yesterday and spoke over a block of their limited-edition Gut Happy chocolate which as you’ll hear is not your average chocolate.

Belly Podcast - 29 September 2026 Guests: Lisa Apostolides Byron Youth Theatre, Dr. Corin Storkey Seleno Health Pt.1

My guest on Belly this morning is Ruthie Einfeld. Previous Radio Course participant, a bright spark who lit up the class each week, made us laugh and stepped outside of her comfort zone to learn what it takes to present your own show.

One of the things I love most about community radio and something I share with the class each time is this incredible ability to transport you, our beautiful listener, to places and people via the delightful gift of your own imagination.

We share words, and each of you will hear those words differently, transform the words into images in your imagination and possess your own unique version of the story. It’s quite magical.

For example:  Imagine hundreds of colourful, wildly decorated classic cars setting off on a 10-day road trip through some of the most remote parts of Queensland.  Engines running, horns blaring, music playing and plenty of friendly rivalry, set amongst the tropical sting of the north Queensland sun. Get the picture?

That’s the Variety Bash. An annual fundraising adventure raising money for Variety, the Children’s Charity supporting kids in rural and remote communities, including equipment, grants, scholarships and programs.

The classic cars travel thousands of kilometres, visiting these remote communities and schools along the way, raising money and bringing a whole lot of excitement to the towns they pass through.

This year’s Queensland Bash began in Innisfail on August 17 and wound its way through the Queensland outback before finishing in Gladstone on August 27.Over ten days, the Variety Bash takes these classic cars on a journey of more than 2,000 kilometres.

Among the drivers was Ruthie Einfeld, behind the wheel of her 1966 Ford Falcon, affectionately known as Frankie.

Having recently returned Ruthie is on her way into the studios to join us and share some of her stories and adventures from the road with us today.
