Beeso is joined by special guest Jarrod Kimber of ESPNcricinfo to explore one of our favourite discussion topics on the pod, the advent of next-generation analytics in 'traditional' sports, and how this transforms coaching and front-office decisions. Like baseball, the prototypical next-gen analytics sport (being responsible for giving the world fantasy sports, sabermetrics and Moneyball), cricket is a series of 1-v-1 contests with definable outcomes - so it should be very amenable to a big data revolution. But what is that data, is it the right data, what kind of questions are being asked with it, and are the answers being listened to? Aside from being our favourite example of intelligent, insightful Australian sportswriting in a local media ecosystem of Mostly Not That, in the last few years Jarrod has led the discussion around the rise of analytics in cricket, particularly on the franchise-led, business-over-blazers T20 side of the game. As he discusses with Beeso, not only has it pulled cricket at large into a fascinating philosophical conflict between traditional and analytical (and between club and country), and led us to reconsider our received wisdom about many facets of the game, it's led him to somewhat of a personal career crossroads. You can read Jarrod's invariably bloody excellent writing on ESPNcricinfo and learn more about his sports writing course on his personal website Dystopian Northern Suburbs. Let's Gone St Lucia Stars.
