California Gov. Gavin Newsom said artificial intelligence systems will face a slew of new safety and security standards as he pushes for leading companies to develop an AI “kill switch.”

Newsom cited recent incidents at major AI labs OpenAI and Anthropic that have led researchers to sound alarms on the potential catastrophic consequences of the unchecked development of the technology. Newsom, a likely presidential contender for 2028, particularly blamed Congress and President Donald Trump for inaction on the issue.
