Hey, everyone, welcome back to another episode of Bachelor Happy Hour.
I'm Joe and I'm Serena, and we are.
So lucky to have me one and only Jesse Palmer in the studio, even though we're not in the studio. Jesse, how you doing, Welcome to the pod.
I'm doing awesome. I'm awesome. How are you guys? Congratulations?
First off, I know we were talking about it a little bit before we got started, but the wedding in Charleston looked absolutely amazing.
It was it was we're still we're still recovering. Also, congratulations to you and Emily. Baby girl, baby girl on the way.
Baby Girl on the way in January.
I know, all the feels amazing, Yeah, all.
The feels excited, freaked out.
Did you want like, did you have a strong feeling boy or girl?
Like, did you have a prediction or one that you were hoping for?
Well, the odds in Vegas had boy and it was pretty It was pretty heavy in Vegas because in my family it's Chiss boys, two brothers, I have four nephews, Like don't make girls in our family. So that's why I was really hoping it was going to be a girl and when we found out it was a girl, I was just so excited and then and then it was kind of like right away, I thought, like, what do I how do I do this? I don't have a sister, and I don't know, I don't have any experience being a girl dad. You know, I'm going to have to figure this out on the fly. But I am so thrilled, so thrilled.
You're going to be an amazing girl dad.
You're the girl dad of bachelination, the girl and boy dad of bacheloration.
I'm like Uncle Jesse a bacheloration. Yeah, yes, yeah, I know how to handle drama. At least I figured that out.
You know, way more about girl drama than most dads does.
Does Emily have any siblings.
She's got a sister and a brother, and she's got nieces. Emily's so ready for this. She's locked and loaded, like like, baby's going to be speaking Portuguese before she speaks English, and I'm putting a tennis racket in her hand. By the third Yeah, we got Yeah, so it's you know, we got small parts of it I think figured out. But I knew from the day I think I met Emily. I knew she was going to be an amazing mom. She just has that natural maternal instinct that you can just sort of feel and see. Anytime there's a little baby near us, Emily just takes over and it's just it's amazing to watch.
So I was really hopeful.
When I met her that, you know, I wanted to have a family one day, and it was important to meet someone that I knew it was going to be a great example to our children.
Emily's absolutely that.
I feel pressure now to live up to Emily and kind of her standard. You know, you go through, like I've thought about it so many times, insecurities and am I going to be enough?
Am I going to know what to say?
The other day we just had like Emily and I had these crazy conversations all the time. We're sitting at the table and I'm like, you know, I think it's really important that we teach our daughter about integrity.
And she's like, that sounds great. How do you do that truly?
Well, integrity is like doing what you say you're going to do, right. She's like, yeah, Like give an example, and I'm like I'll get back, I'll get back.
Think about that.
Just things that you would never think about until you're in the position, like I can honestly say, I've never thought about what it looks like to teach your child about integrity.
Yeah, it's I don't know, it's you know it.
I think all I can do is, like, you know, and Emily and I say this is, let's just love our daughter as much as we can.
Let's just pour so much love on her and just figure it out.
And obviously we have our own our own upbringing, and you know, things my parents did and things her parents did, and try to incorporate the stuff we love and leave out the stuff you don't, and just you know, try our best. But I just, you know, I'm just so excited to love this little girl and and figure it out. Make mistakes because I have zero idea what I'm doing, Like zero idea.
Yeah, you're going to make a lot of mistakes. I feel that. I feel like Emily, well she'll she'll carry the load on this one.
But well, as long as you love your daughter, which you already do, you're going to be great parents and she's going to be beautiful.
We're so excited for you, guys. I hope she's feeling okay.
I know, like the first trimester can be tough, but hopefully you guys want the more fun phase of prepe.
Yeah, the golden trimester is the second trimester. Emily's been a rockstar. Man, she's been She's been awesome. She's really she's just you know, I'm kind of always like walking on egg shelters around her, like is this the day?
Is this the day it's gonna you know?
Yeah, it hasn't.
It hasn't happened yet.
Emily has been I think that she still likes me, so we're good.
That's great.
How say, how does she handle it? I mean, you've got to be wildly busy now football started as well, so you're constantly going, how's she dealing with that?
Yeah, she's She's been great, Joe. From from the beginning in our relationship, she's always been super understanding, which which I appreciate so much. She has given me so much space to focus and prioritize work, and one of the things that I'm really excited about now is to put that priority and focus on family and make more time. Like I need to slow down. I just need to do that.
Anyway.
I'm not good at that. I'm go, go, go, It's like a quarterback in a two minute drill. All the time.
I'm just constantly.
You're everywhere, You're everywhere, Like if there's an event, Jesse's there. Jesse Paul is headlighting every event.
And that's going to have to stop. That's gonna have to change and and and this is going to do it. Like I really feel like now the focus can come back to Emily and the baby and our family, and I'm so excited about that. Emily is giving me all the space in the world for the last five six years to do anything I wanted to do work wise, and now I'm just excited to kind of hone in on this nice nice love this.
Oh I got one question for him that you wouldn't ask the wrong podcast. Let's let's go National champion prediction college football college football.
I'm going to go it's.
Gonna be like I'm gonna say, like just because we always say Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State going off off the rail, Florida State.
Michigan, Wow. And I'm gonna go Michigan this year, just just for a different take.
You want to know what you want to know what I think? Yes, I and I don't buy I don't buy into all the noise, even though I am from the Midwest. I'm gonna go Notre Dame.
I like it because because you guys can throw the ball.
This year sight Notre Dame for the first time in a long time is really good, exciting to watch offensively thrown it all over the yard. They have this quarterback named Sam Hartman and is lighting it up. Joe's happy. You're gonna make my brother happy. My brother played for Notre Dame, so now so palmer House still inspired up.
Joe's I like it as much as much as I'm sure all of our listeners are here to listen to college foolfall predictions.
I'm gonna make a little pivot.
Let's before we get into all the exciting things coming up in Bostriination, we have to talk about a quick note on Charity's finale.
Jesse, Charity and Dotton.
We've got the two lovers out and about how did that finale go for you? How do you feel about Charity and Dotton? Are you excited?
Yeah? Well, it was great.
First off, it was great having you both there too, and I'm sure you felt it. I mean, it just felt like a positive night all night long. There was just a lot of really good energy.
You know. It was just it felt like I felt like Oprah.
We were like constantly giving people things and and it was just a really good feeling.
It's nice the way, not us. Every time we're sitting there, I'm always like, come on, give me, let's go to.
Get like we have a hide and wool coming up, We'll take a trip to Greece.
We want to free cruise.
Yeah exactly.
I know.
You know it was like for Charity and I know how excited they were for that day to finally come and to be able to walk out there, to get as a couple and not keep it a secret anymore. I remember when we were filming Mentel all Charity and I were backstage, and you know, I was looking at her and I'm like, you hanging in any gas left in the tank? I mean, there's still a few weeks ago. This is like the hardest time. And she said, I just cannot wait for after the final rows to walk out there with my man and just live my life with them, and she would have our families there. So I think that celebration of their relationship and their love and having all those people. Having people like you there, I think made it so special from the beginning to end. When I think back to their journey together, anytime I spoke to Charity off camera and you mentioned the name Dotton, face just lit up, like you're kind of like, Okay, well it could be this person or this person, but really, like deep down inside, when I saw her visceral reaction to just saying his name, I thought, in the beginning, I thought, I think it's I think it's not who. From the beginning really kind of got off to a slower start than some of the other guys. Didn't have a one on one day early early, it was you know, it was kind of a something that progressed and happened later. But they're just so right for each other. They're just their their story I think is magical. I could not be happier for her to see her dreams come true like that, and to meet such a wonderful guy, and to celebrate that all together with so many people of bacheloration in the audience like yourselves.
For me, it was really special. I thought it was great.
Yeah, Yeah, they're such a beautiful couple, and I think you hit the nail on the head, Like it was just such a positive night, like everyone was so happy, so excited for them, and also so excited for our new bachelor Joey who I think you start filming the season soon, right, Yeah.
That's to Joe's point earlier, that is coming up very very quickly. It's right around the corner and super thrilled, you know. I remember seeing him a few weeks ago as well, like right before AFR, and you know, kind of saying to him, hey, man, like are you you know he had just found out, like are you are you ready to be the Bachelor? Like your life's going to change, and he was like, man, I'm just trying to come up for Ayer right now and everything that's just happened with Charity, Like I'm just getting back home all the stuff that the show's on TV. Like, I think his world was like just going like a thousand miles a minute. But at least since I've been hosting for the last two years, I don't think there's ever been from a fan standpoint or Bachelor Nation standpoint, a more unanimous choice to the Bachelor.
I just told Serena that before the podcast.
Yeah, I agree, it feels like that, right, it's like in the past, it's like ten percent want this person, twenty percent that one, thirteen percent that one, and so you never really make everybody happy based on whoever you pick. I feel like this is like a grand slam.
Sure.
Yeah, and he's a great dude, like he deserves it. He you know, great guy. I think he has all the characteristics and the qualities you're looking for. He was heartbroken after that goodbye and feed you with Charity. He really he had fallen in love with her and he was really hoping that was going to be it.
That was the one.
I know it took him time to get past that, but you know, hopefully he has had some time to kind of settle down and just collect himself emotionally. I think is the most important thing, because because it's it's all about to take off. I seldomly get dms on social media from people wanting to be on someone's show. I am getting flooded by women that saw him be chosen as the Bachelor and are now like, I got to get on. I've submitted my application. Is there any way I can go to the front of the line. Can you get me in front of a producer, which of course, I can't like that. It's a conflict of interest. I can't like I have no That's one of the biggest misconceptions about this is that I get to choose a who the bachelor is, who goes to Paradise, and who could come on the show.
That's way about.
People really think you're like running everything, Jesse.
Like, literally, I walk in the room it's the final ROAs tonight, and I walk out. That's all I do. That's all I have to do.
Everyone's like, see Palmer must be the head of casting as well.
I got no power.
Yeah, I feel like Joey's Joey was the right choice, and it's gonna be it's gonna be pretty smooth for you. I mean they really threw you in the wall stand with Clayton or right away, and then then following it up with Gabby and Rachel. I mean you had a wild, a wild beginning.
It was good. Yeah.
Yeah, you gotta just kind of get into the fire, and all three of them were awesome, you know, and it was just you know, but when you watch the show on TV and then you finally get you know, you get out there and kind.
Of you do it. There were some memorable and some obviously wild moments. So you know, we'll see how it goes with Joey.
I meaneah, sure there'll be no shortage of chaos with Joey either.
All Right, So you've been doing this now, you've been now that we're going on two years, and now there's a brand new show, The Golden Bachelor, that you just you guys just filmed. Yeah, and it's now about to air. How how was that? Was it what you expected? Like, yeah, let's give it a little bit of.
A Yeah, it's like it's funny. I didn't really know what to expect. We had.
I had a lot of questions and like like like execution questions, like not even big picture things, but more like, hey, like on the first night, which is the longest night in TV, at that first row ceremony, we've all been there, starts at seven ends at eight am, like with a seventy two year old guy, like are we gonna take naps? Are we gonna are we gonna get? Is this thing gonna be over by like MIDNIGHTE? How amazing would that be? Are there going to be fantasy sweets?
Like?
Is there gonna be intimacy? Is that like gonna happen, Like do I have to have that.
Talk with them?
Like, are Gary and I gonna break it down? How awkward is that going to be? It's like talking to your dad when you're a kid, like about the birds and the beat. It's like all the things.
That already see right already, right right now, it's slow hanging through, it's right there. Yeah, so it was.
But I got to say, I think we were all kind of learning as we were going throughout throughout filming. The most important part and the magic behind all of it. I know you got you. We all know this is. It's the people. And Gary's a rock star. Gary's amazing. He's such a sweet guy. He's had this incredible life. He's lived so much. He's got so much knowledge. He's one of He's so emotionally intelligent. He's so good with his words. He's the best I've ever seen since I've been hosting at walking in the room before a Rose ceremony and addressing the ladies. Just the things he says, it's eloquent, it's it just hits the nail on the head.
He's he was, he was just so ready for this.
He's experienced unbelievable tragedy and loss in his life, and he's ready for this opportunity to find his person. The women were amazing. The women are amazing, and you're going to see that Night one. I knew right away. As soon as these women got out of the limo. I was like, this is this is a home run. These women are awesome. Every other show, every Bachelor show I've hosted, I watched or Bachelorette. I watch people get out of the limo Night one, they get to the mansion. They're freaking out rightfully. So there's cameras everywhere. You know, you've never been in that environment. You forget what you're gonna say when you walk up to the person, you forget your name. You do that, you might have to do it again. Take another, take all this stuff. Every single one of these women came out of a limo guys, and they blushed it so confident, so confident, like they were rolling up. They had their spiel, they had their stick, they said what they wanted to say. They were flirty, they were whatever they were doing. It was like one after another after another after another, and I was just standing there thinking, this is incredible, Like it's just it was. It was wild just to kind of see that different dynamic in front of the mansion and a familiar setting that we've seen over and over and over again. But I think the cast is what's really going to make this season so special and unique because they everybody was amazing.
Was there ever a moment during the season where you kind of just like looked looked onto the group of women and thought like, this is so similar, but what the fuck is he like this?
Yeah, like you know, yes, it was the first it was the first date card drop off, So it's the morning after the very first row ceremony. You're going in and it was like that giant couch full of grand like your grandma's that talk a lot, Yeah, and it's like you're Italian, No, no, who's just sitting there and she's like telling you all this stuff and she's like, like, first off, walking in the house, the kitchen smelled amazing. It was the best the kitchen you have, legendary, Like these women were cooking up a feast. They were all in there and it was like Thunday sauce and they're doing all their like and they're all helping each other and plaiting. It was like you go in on the bachelorette first night, all the dudes are in there, like hungover, and it smells like burnt eggs and like Mimosa's, it's brutal.
This was it smelt way better.
But then getting there and seeing them all and you like ask them one question and you're you're just going to get an answer from this woman. And then like seventeen of them get a turn and they're taking it off.
And they're asking me questions and where did you grow up? Yeah, you look like you have a nice mom. I bet you, I bet you have a nice Yeah.
I was gonna say, are you getting any Oh, Jesse, you're such a cute boy, like any of that.
Yeah, squeezing the cheese and little they're such a good kid.
Really, you got a very you got a very nice voice. That boy, Jesse, he's got a nice voice. He's real. You're walking out, You're like, what's this. It was a completely different vibe to it. It's just very loving and nurturing women who who have kids, a lot of them have grandkids. I mean they're just that's just who they are, and they're just very they're just very loving people, and so it was really nice to be in that kind of environment.
I'm so excited to get to meet some of them.
Yeah, but we got to see some drama, right, I mean, they some of them, even though they're they're probably wonderful, just just great women. They some of them got to be ready to roll.
I agree, But yeah, so like that, that was one of the things I was wondering too, Jog. I was like, Okay, well, surely like a seventy year old woman's not going to fall for the same stuff that a twenty two year old does on the show, like that, they're they've got more emotional uh stamina to deal with this, and sure not, like sure enough for a few days.
It all, you know, all put a bunch of women in a bunch of bunk beds in the house, you know, and all of a sudden, you know, it's just some stuff happens, and some of it get gets brought to Gary's attention and he's kind of.
Like like, what are do I have to moderate this?
Like how how are we handling all this? And he did a phenomenal job.
But you know that there'll be some themes that I think people at home will be very, very very familiar with when they're watching.
I'm gonna say, I'm excited to see like the parallels between Like it's the same format, it's the same show, like it's The Bachelor, just with a different generation of cast. Yeah, so like the things that are like like you said, like coming in for the first date card and they're all sitting on the couch and like seeing those similarities, but then also how it unfolds differently because of the differences in the cast. Is there anything that you learn from doing The Golden Bachelor that maybe you're going to take in to your time on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette moving forward.
Yeah, you know, I don't know, it's interesting, Like it's always one of those things. I feel like, you know, you get done shooting it and then you kind of think back on it a little bit. The show will come out on there, you'll sort of watch yourself back and see all the things that happened.
I don't know.
I don't know for me personally if there would be like a stylistic change in anything that I do moving forward.
I think more than anything, I'm.
Just going to really appreciate sort of the moments that I had and the advice I got. You know, normally I'm the one giving people some advice I think you should do in a situation, or you know, if I ever have a little remedy from something that happened in a past relationship. For me, I had nothing I could tell Gary or any of these women on love, on intimacy, on anything like that.
I tell you, Jesse, Jesse, say that line, Jesse, you could do so much better.
Really feel it, feel it, Please say you're goodbyes.
Always is Jesse constantly breaking down at it.
I was like, Hi, I had so much confidence going into the season. It's so true.
It's like they they just they were giving me advice. And Gary had me on the edge of my seat talking about love and relationships, and you know, I want to have the love with Emily that Gary had with Tony for decades. You know, he found that he had that, and he would he would he would tell me, you know, I'd ask him while we were on camera too, sometimes just say hey, man, like what do I have to do to find that? Literally had me on the edge of my seat. And so I think, more than anything, just be appreciative of some of the wisdom that was imparted from from from everybody.
From the men and the women. You know, they told me very early.
I don't know if it'll be on camera, but like on that first day, the day card drop off, they were like, we can tell we can teach you a lot of stuff, you know, like we know you just got married, like you should you should be asking me questions.
I'm like, you're right, probably should.
Oh my gosh, that's so fun.
Okay, so we have the Bachelor, the Bachelor at the Golden Bachelor, and now Bachelor in Paradise. This is correct me if I'm wrong, this is your second Paradise.
Second Paradise, second Paradise.
All right, So how was it?
How to go?
Uh?
Man? It was? You know, it was wild and crazy.
You're both paradise experts, obviously, you know all about it. The thing I've learned second time around year two, and this is becoming a theme, is on the first day when I'm at the steps and everybody's showing up and you talk to you greet them, and you send them down the stairs. What I always am finding now is that everybody has it figured out when they show up to paradise. Like I feel like people sort of People kind of sometimes get this preconceived idea of I know who's going to be there, I know who I'm going to meet, this is the person I'll be interested in, this is the person I need to date, and then I'm just gonna you know, we'll get engaged at the end if it goes well for me, and if not, you know, obviously I'm going home. And what I've learned is is more often than not, things don't paradise the way you think it's going to happen.
And I always say that's the biggest mistake that people can do. And I think maybe it's just because we are an example of how like, you know that doesn't work, because we went down with like not knowing each other is going to be there, and different expectations. But I just feel like anytime you see people you watch them go down with very specific plans and expectations and thinking they know how things are going to go, it's just like you want to shake them and be like, it's not gonna go like that.
That's what I was gonna say. That's why I think our season was so successful as far as relationships and coming off of it, because there was that break right there was that COVID break, So you had a full year where we didn't have paradise. So even if you went in there with the plan, you had to be cautious, like who's going to be there? Or they dropped me down there? No one had any clue I was even alive, you know, Like it's just but like that's that's the thing, like when you go in the paradise, in my opinion, when you go into paradise with a strong plan, that is.
Like when people are at the top of the steps looking super confident on what's about to happen for them, it just makes me so nervous.
You're right, I feel the same way and I could feel it too, And you know, you just you sort of ask the questions you hope it is down there, who do you want to meet? And they just have it. They had the answers, And you're right. I think the more open minded you're able to be and more willing to have conversations and spend time with people, from what I've seen two years now hosting it is those are generally the relationships.
That work out.
One thing I would tease for people at home this season, the couples that are going to be there together at the end are probably not on your Bengo card going into this this season. But that's that's probably why they're successful too. People were the people were willing to open open their eyes, give people, give people chances, take their time through it without going in. You know, it's it's a round peg. It's going to fit in a round toll and that's the only way this is going to work for me. Yeah, because Paradise is very unpredictable, as as we all know.
From the original cast the season. Who are who are you personally most excited.
To see Rachel? For one?
And the reason why is because obviously, you know, having having been there on a season with Gabby and on our season with Clayton, like, Rachel's been through a lot of stuff on the show that there's been some some the moments that she's experienced that I think are probably pretty traumatic. There's the Row Ceremony from Hell in Iceland. She went through the Row ceremony as a bachelortt where she was offered people roses and getting rejected. So, you know, Rachel's been through a lot and now she's coming She's coming back in right. I think a lot of people Joe feel the same way. And I could kind of tell when Rachel was walking down the steps there was a little bit of trepidation, like like.
I'm going back into this again, you know, and I have these experiences and what's going to happen.
Rachel is such a rock star and she I really feel like I saw the Rachel that we saw in the beginning of Clayton season, you know, just when she was just open and she was hopeful, and it was it was so great great seeing that side of her because I get it she went through some really really tough things that would scar anybody emotionally. And the fact that she was even will to like show up on the beach again, I thought was so brave. So I was really really happy to see her another person who I'm really happy to see.
And I know people have mixed feelings on this, but band Paradise is built. Yes, yeah, Like Sena is this not his wheelhouse?
It absolutely is. When he was a time.
See maker, like you do you need you need a braid?
Yeah, you need a brain and you need a quirky, out there personality.
Someone would know Felter.
He's a major flirt like Paradise was made for brain And once the minute we realized it was never going to work out with him and Charity, we were like, it's fine, we'll see him in Paradise.
He's the first ye suitcase full of ear rings, like he's so ready. He's got the scarves, he's got the hats. I remember, uh, you know I spoke to them in the palapa, you know that first time we gather everybody up here in the plata, it's like, hey, here are the rules of Paradise. Now go check out your bunk beds or it's like and everybody kind of runs to their rooms and everyone's on the beach and they're kind of all walking. Braden's like twenty yards out in front of everybody, like literally frolicking in the sand like he was like skipping and like like just like splashing, kicking like the waves of his feet. He was in his happy place, no doubt, and probably pretty pretty predictable. You knew he was going to be thriving down there on the beach, seeing.
See going uh, focusing a little bit on you real quick because I know we're running out of time here, but seeing you live like you're you're so good, like you never like watching you hosts, like you never have to like you really never have to resay anything, like you're just you are so good. Do you ever get nervous on any of these shows? Is or ever a moment? Because I was just thinking when you mentioned like walking in and talking to everyone for the first time in the plapa, Like, is there ever a moment on any of these shows that you get a little flustered?
Every every time I talk to anybody, I'm nervous.
Really, it's like when I played Yeah, it's like when I played football. But it makes me feel good because I care. And if I didn't care, I would't I wouldn't be nervous.
Right, That's exactly what Well said us about our level, about our vows.
Yeah, He's like, I try to reframe nerves as like that. If I'm nervous, I really care about something and it's important to me, and that's a good thing.
Yeah, And it's like I feel like I feel ready, I feel prepared, you know. I I I take it. I take it really seriously. I love my job. I love my job, but being out there, the energy of live shows with an audience is awesome. You know, it's former as former, Like as a former athlete, we're always struggling to find the thing that's going to give us the rush that we had when we were on the field in a stadium and and sort of in that rush, and it's so hard for us to do anything in our careers afterwards to define that again. Live TV delivers that for me one thousand percent. But it helps me so much when I get to see people like you, and you see familiar faces in the audience and ambachtor nation like fans that care about it. Everyone's there, you know, to to kind of witness what's going to happen, and everyone's invested in it. And so for me, like I'm always nervous, I'm nervous when I'm talking to cast. I'm nervous all the time. But it's just just because it matters to me, and and I want to be good at it, and but and I want to serve everybody, like I want people at home and people in the audience and the cast to feel like, you know, they're getting a great effort and they're and because they deserve that.
I think, well, you better put that effort into your daughter.
That's all I, oh my god, Yeah, I have one more cast I want to ask him about really quickly.
Eliza.
We were personally very surprised to see her return to Paradise after her experience on last season. You know, she was kind of in that messy love triangle. The reunion was definitely a tough spot for her to be in. Were you surprised to see her coming back?
Yes, And I exactly what you just said.
I asked her when I saw at the top of the steps again kind of another you know, have you had time to recover from that? You know, where's your headspace coming into this. Not not a lot of people would do what you're doing right now, considering everything that's happened. But Eliza trust the process and she was hoping that she could meet someone and she wanted to come back and give them their shot. I give her credit for that.
Yeah, that's not an easy thing to do, so I hope it works up for her second time around. You know, you never know worked out for you second time around.
I did look at this, look at this. Yeah, I totally forgot about her. Yeah, because I remember I remember her at the reunion show for Paradise, and I was like, this is rough. Yeah, this one's rough.
Well and to your point too, It's like I remember talking to people, Hey, who are you excited to see here? You didn't hear Eliza's name come up a lot, not because people didn't want to meet her, because I don't think a lot of people expected her to.
Be there, totally sure, you know what I mean.
And so I think when she hit the beach, like, there were you know, Eliza's obviously a very you know, she's very beautiful. There were a lot of guys like as soon as she walked down, dude's eyes were like lighting up.
Oh yeah, excited that she was there. Yeah, I've that nice.
