When did we lose the ability to get along with people we might not agree with? When did we become so angry and hateful?

We talk around the edges of this issue all the time but it was highlighted this week by an occurrence in the United States. Talk-show host Ellen Degeneres was filmed sitting next to former President George W Bush at an NFL game and the internet lost its mind!

Degeneres is a gay, Hollywood liberal, Bush is a conservative, former Republican President. How can they possibly sit next to each other??? More incredulous, apparently THEY’RE FRIENDS!!! How can this be??

Well, here’s how Ellen responded.

As you know, I sit firmly on the right side of the political divide. However, and you might want to sit down for this, I have friends who are well and truly on the left! We’ll never agree on a lot of stuff. But we can still have respect for each other. We have some robust discussions and some fiery debates – but it’s never personal. 

Why can’t we all just get along? As Ellen says, why can’t we be kind to each other?
