We can only hope that the full force of the law crashes down on people who deliberately light fires during a total fire ban.

It will be of little comfort to those who have lost property, but it’s fair to say, we dodged a bit of a bullet yesterday. It could’ve been a lot worse and while the fire danger facing much of Australia is not over by a long shot, we can tentatively breathe a little easier.

The crisis also highlighted the best of Australian resilience. Countless heroes continue to fight fires and put themselves in harms way. Civilians continue to play support roles to those on the front line and I also want to pay tribute to my colleagues in the media for keeping their communities informed.

But clearly we don’t do a good enough job because fools and morons still defied the rules of a total fire ban. Some say they didn’t know! Well I guess that’s what happens when you live under a rock.

What’s worse, is that criminals, evil people apparently deliberately lit some of the fires that put many in danger.

We can only hope that the full force of the law crashes down on their cursed heads.
