Well what a surprise! Two staff from Melbourne’s so-called “safe-injecting room” have been arrested amidst drug trafficking allegations.

Who would have thought that if you create a place where official policy is to turn a blind eye to illegal activity and create a captive audience of drug addicts, drug dealers would be attracted to it like moths to a flame?

The problem with these safe injecting rooms is not only by definition, they condone the use of insidious illicit drugs, nor is it that it creates a focal point for illegal activity. It’s that it has a wider and bigger impact on the rule of law.

When you open the door and excuse one form of crime, you effectively erode law enforcement’s ability to police other crime.

In New York City, they called it the “broken windows” theory. That is, if you let something as seemingly insignificant as vandalism slide, then criminals will see it as an invitation to commit bigger and more brazen crimes.

Is there any wonder we have raised a generation so prepared to push the envelope?
