Today is National Police Remembrance Day... did you know that?

View descriptionShare

ANZAC Day is arguably the most solemn day on the Australian calendar and quite rightly so. It has come to represent far more than just the end of a bloody and horrific campaign from the Great War. As a result, we acknowledge the sacrifice of all Australian service personnel from all conflicts both before and since and from all theatres of war. It has become a pseudo-symbol of what it means to be Australian.

But what about our police officers? Today is National Police Remembrance Day – when we acknowledge and pay tribute to those who have fallen in the line of duty.

Isn’t it about time we show the same respect to our coppers that we do to our Diggers? Isn’t it fair to say that they put their lives on the line each and every day to protect us and our way of life just as much as soldiers do?

Particularly in the modern era when the face and nature of war has changed, and terrorism is as much a reality as organised, armed conflict? Our police are at the front line of that battle every day.

Victoria shut down today because there’s a footy match on tomorrow. Yet National Police Remembrance Day came and went with scarce acknowledgement from we the general public.

We should be a bit ashamed at that, but we can make sure we acknowledge it more fully next year. I’d be more than happy to give up any other public holiday bar ANZAC and Australia Days to remember our fallen police heroes.
