Should we ditch the Constitutional Monarchy?

View descriptionShare

Well, it’s been 20 years since Australia held the republican referendum. Resoundingly, we voted no to ditching the Constitutional Monarchy that has served us so well since Federation. But a lot has changed since 1999.

Many of us have lost faith in the system. I’m not sure that has anything to do with the system itself but probably more the people in charge of the system at the moment.

The Royals are not the beacon of light they might once have been. The Queen remains a pillar of grace and integrity, but her kids and grand kids leave a bit to be desired. Look at her third child for goodness’ sake?

So is it time to revisit the debate?

I voted no last time and would probably vote no again. Last time I objected to the model and the people running the republican campaign. This time, I wouldn’t trust the current mob to get it right either.

If you voted no last time? Why? Was it the model? Was it the people pushing it? Because today, we have not only Malcolm Turnbull waving the republican flag, but also Peter FitzSimons, Anthony Albanese and Richard Di Natale! It hasn’t improved at all, has it?
