Is the Prime Minister not allowed to have a beer and watch the footy?

View descriptionShare

We all know the outrage machine is out of control but when did we become outraged an Australian Prime Minister attending a sporting event involving an Australian national team or God-forbid, having a beer!!!

We use to clap like trained seals whenever former PM Bob Hawke sculled a beer at the cricket – yep we thought it was fantastic to see a bloke in his eighties drink irresponsibly – but when the current PM has a beer with the Australian Rugby League team, we go into meltdown!

Let’s not forget the match he attended in Fiji was the Prime Minister’s 13 for goodness sake!

There is plenty to legitimately criticise Scott Morrison for – not the least his insistence on calling himself ScoMo but attending an international sporting contest is not one of them.

There’ll be those who parrot the phrase “why isn’t he back here doing his job?” but of course we all know travelling internationally and representing Australia is part of his job. They’ll cry “why isn’t he doing something about the drought?” despite recent announcements of billions of dollars towards water infrastructure. And let’s not forget it’s not the only thing he has to worry about.

Rightly or wrongly, Australia is a sporting mad nation. Some might have a problem with that and maybe we need to tone it down a bit, but so long as we insist that we “deserve” a public holiday for sporting events, we also have to accept that our Prime Minister will get involved in sport.

How can we expect our politicians to get serious about their jobs if we don’t get serious about the things we whinge about?
