Almost half of NSW building sites have dodgy scaffolding!

View descriptionShare

How do we get the message through to some industries about workplace safety?

It’s been revealed that almost half of NSW building sites have dodgy scaffolding and there’s no reason to think that other states aren’t in a similar situation.

We’ve seen a number of deaths on building sites in recent months and while accidents will always happen, one death is still too many – especially when it’s preventable.

But who is responsible? Particularly with scaffolding, there’s a handover procedure. The supplier signs off to say the scaffolding has been installed properly and then leaves the site. How can they be sure someone else won’t tamper with it?

Whose job should it be to check it? Obviously, the head contractor has overall responsibility for workplace safety, but what about the foreman on the ground? Is he or she checking often enough?

Is the individual tradie responsible for checking his or her equipment at the start of each day or should the authorities be roaming around checking work sites?

The only certainty is that we can’t go on in 2019 with young people especially, dying while at work.
