Hispanic faculty members at the University of Texas lag behind their counterparts in salary, leadership positions and headcounts, according to a recently released report. The 188-page report issued this month by a group of UT professors, the Independent Equity Committee, shows Hispanics in 2017 made up about 7% of tenure and tenure-track faculty compared to their white counterparts. The report also found of the 98 academic departments and equivalent units, only six department chairs are Hispanic. In addition to a lack of representation in leadership positions, the report notes Hispanic faculty are compensated significantly less than other faculty with Hispanic full professors on average getting paid about $25,000 less than white full professors. UT Executive Vice President and Provost Maurie McInnis said the university has heard this sense of urgency clearly in their report and "will remain focused on taking real action through an inclusive and deliberate approach.”
