Live 105 host Dallas spoke with Young The Giant over the weekend at the Outside Lands music festival in the Bay Area, about their memories of the festival and what they’ve got planned for fans in the near future.

On the road all summer with Cage the Elephant, Young The Giant flew into the Bay Area just for the festival before packing back up to continue the tour in Winnipeg, and they admit they’re enjoying the refreshing weather.

“Surprisingly, we kind of hit a cool streak from Madison, Wisconsin, and Indie,” Sameer Gadhia tells us, “but before that, it was quite hot and humid.”

Looking back on some fond Outside Lands memories, guitarist Jacob Tilley recalls watching Neil Young and Crazy Horse perform, “and some of my friends and I had partaken in certain chemicals that made it really, really scary. It was awesome. I love Neil Young, but then like, there would be, you know, 10-minute jam solos and we were all kind of in the fetal position. Yeah, that was pretty cool. Saw Andrew Bird at the Sutro stage, which was incredible, and more recently -- a couple of years ago -- saw James Blake at the same stage and he did a very kind of Radiohead-ish set, which was awesome. Love this festival.”

Northern California happens to be a home away from home of sorts for the Los Angeles-based group. “Jacob went to Santa Cruz, I went to Stanford, and when we first started playing shows, it was often college shows and all the easiest ones to book were at the schools that we had been at,” Sameer explains. “We spent a lot of time up here actually in the very beginning parts of our career playing all over the Bay area. It's always a blast to the past for us… just seeing how far we've come since then."

With the future in mind, Jacob says the band took some time to hit the studio while they had a few days off in Nashville on their current tour, “and, you know, came out with a couple of gems. We've been taking little retreats throughout the year to write and throw some paint on the wall and see what sticks. I think early next year we'll get in the studio… hopefully some new music soon.”
