Our old mate Hughesy joined us on Monday to take us behind the scenes of the viral footage of him kicking audience members out of his show
Now, one of my mates is in the news overnight because he's doing the comedy festival in Adelaide at the moment, and he gave a couple of people the boots from his show and it's gone viral. So we've got him on the line. Do you have Dave Hughes Hey.
Yes, Look, hello, legends. Look, I'm not I'm not one for kicking audience members out in general, but when you give people five warnings that they need to be quiet and they don't listen to any of those warnings, every now and again, you just got to You just got to push a button, you know, you've got to get a out.
So what happened? How did it all go down? What were they saying? They're just being annoying or what was going on?
Yeah? I think Look, they're in the second row, and I think I think they were just discussing stuff that I was talking about, Like but it was like they were on goggle Box, you know, they were just like they were. I think they were discussing, yeah, the themes that I was bringing up. But you know what, it was way too loud. This woman was way too drunk, and you know, I tried to negotiate with her, and she just would not listen to me. She would just kept talking. So I said, look, if you keep talking, you're gonna have to go. She didn't believe me, but she found out that she had to go. So yeah, I think.
We've got a bit of a I was going to say, I think we've got a little bit of an audio. Like I've been to a lot of your gigs and I've seen you're incredibly tolerant because everyone thinks that they're your best mate, and everyone's yelling stuff out at you all the time. So for you to reach this point, they must have been a real pain in the ass. But we've got some audio. I believe you have.
That Mitch from the front.
It's really.
Jeez. That side geez, next level.
It sounds like Parliament hour, doesn't it.
That's crazy, David.
I mean the reality though these days is cheesy that like on some level this sucks, Like you've got to look at who is doing it and go, okay, am I going to get attacked here? Because this is some group that can like be victimized in some way because everyone seems to grab that handle now and depending whatever, like you know, whatever, the freaking hell. They are like, can go oh no, he kicked me out and I was pregnant, Like you would have had to have made a.
Question friends who are explaining it or.
One million different things right that anyone can grab on now, and that seems to be the way society is going that you know they can.
Do that, So I'm thinking of breastfeeding.
Ya.
Was there a point where you thought it was just worth having a crack at these people that you know what I mean, I.
Know what he hit saying, Yeah. Absolutely. At one point they were talking to each other and I thought they were they were going to point out that someone had some sort of you know issue, if you know what I mean what it is, Yeah, one of them. Yeah, I hear, And I did have that thought, but it was just too much. It was like I just couldn't you know what I what I ended up what I realized when you're talking to people who the one was clearly drunk, and but I realized that she won't even remember this the next day, you know, so you're trying to be nice to someone who won't have any memory of the incident at all, and you know they might have been watching the news bigs that ended up on the news and going, I wonder who that was, without realizing it was it.
Was the other thing, ex husy. It seems like you had the crowd behind you as well, Like it wasn't like you threw them out and then the crowd wasn't supporting you. Because I think for most people when they go to comedy shows, whether you get the hecklers or you get people like you were saying, just commenting on your set so far complication. It's as frustrating for the rest of the audience as what it must be for you when you're up behind the mic.
Yeah, I could see people around these people getting really annoyed, and I was getting really annoyed. So yeah, look there's the reaction from the crowd. I didn't realize it was going to be that strong, but yeah, there made me no, you know, I'd made the right decision basically, so, And you know the funny thing is we had to stop the show for probably three or four minutes to get them out. But as soon as they left, the crowd like lifted a level. They're like, yeah, we are going to bloody laugh really hard at everything you say because we agree with what you did. So yeah, you do worry that it will just kill the vibe of the whole night, but it didn't.
You're doing a show, like imagine it's in some sort of sense, in a creative and theatrical way. It's like having a conversation during a play on Broadway. Like if you did that, you get thrown out. It has any different when Shoesy's up there you do on a set like it's you're not just up there talking shit, like it's actually work's gone into it.
Like it is the height of rude.
Absolutely it is, but to the fact that people think that they're funny as well and that they can contribute, Like on some level they probably thought that they were, but.
They weren't talking to huge, they were talking to themselves. And that's what Like, I think it's just modern like people just think they can do whatever they want to. Even not that I'm during comparisons between your show and the Australian Open, but at the Tennis this year, I've never heard so many people just having mid rally, just conversations with each other at full tilt, like full voice. I'm like, what are you doing? Do you have no everyone you understanding of what you've bought tickets for Like, what are you actually doing here?
Sound?
I think you're doing well. You've just got women chatting to each other in your show where I a cruise ship geek once side a woman run up and try and punch me on the stage. Thank Yeah, that's cruise ships for you.
Though, you see did I see that? There's an Australian story? I saw something this morning. I don't know if it's about to come out or if it has come out, but yeah, what's the goal with that? Mate?
Mate? It's tonight in fact, so on the AB Yeah, so it's yeah, they did the Australian story on me, so yeah, if you want to, if you haven't had enough of me, you can watch tonight. So they filmed for bloody of what felt like months, so and I don't know how they're going to boil it down to half an hour, but they are apparently, so yeah, I can't wait to see it myself, to see the debut story on the ABC's.
Then And the best thing is while it's on you can have a chat with your mates. Ash Lutzi and Nikki Osborne podcast
