Art Matters #62 - Rod Price Director of Hillscene LIVE  Intro Track: Paprika Pony, Kim Gordon, No Home Record, 2019 Today on Art Matters we chatted with Rod Price, the Director of Hillscene LIVE. HillsceneLIVE is a grassroots, artist-led festival celebrating experimental contemporary practice from across the Yarra Ranges Audiences are invited to explore Burrinja Cultural Centre through a diverse program of live performance, immersive installations, sound art, projection, movement, visual arts and interdisciplinary works. Visitors are encouraged to move freely throughout the venue, discovering unique artistic experiences as they unfold. The festival supports emerging and established local artists while fostering collaboration, experimentation and creative risk-taking within the Yarra Ranges arts community. This year's HillsceneLIVE presents eight original works by contemporary artists from across the Yarra Ranges and beyond. Audiences are invited to explore immersive installations, intimate performances, sound art, interactive experiences and site responsive works throughout Burrinja. Rod also gave us a hint of what to expect from each of the artists at the event. Featured Artists Jai Cameron — Dying For Applause A playful and participatory outdoor performance that invites audiences to literally get their hands dirty. Blurring the line between performer and participant, Jai's work explores spectacle, audience expectation and our relationship with performance through an interactive experience about one's own mortality. Louise Seymour — In the Blink of an Eye An intimate solo performance exploring deeply personal themes through movement, storytelling and contemporary performance. Presented in a close audience setting, Louise's work offers a powerful and reflective theatrical experience. Pauline Sherlock — The Book of the Baba A multi-part immersive journey unfolding across several locations throughout Burrinja. Combining ritual, performance, audience interaction and theatrical storytelling, Pauline's ambitious work invites visitors into a contemporary myth that evolves throughout the afternoon. Kat Renehan — Who Wants to Eat a Billionaire Sharp, humorous and unapologetically bold, Kat's new performance combines satire and theatre to examine contemporary culture, power and privilege through an engaging live performance. Michele Fountain — AGENT/AGENCY An evolving installation: a love letter to the human hand and the objects they hold. Audiences can observe the work grow throughout the festival as AGENT AGENCY creates, recreates and layers ink-drawn responses to real-world objects. Come inside a monument to the work of human hands.   Sara Lydia Tuell —The Depths An immersive installation and live performance transforming an intimate backstage environment into a mysterious, atmospheric world. Visitors are invited into a deeply sensory experience where installation, sound and performance unfold together. Rindi Harradine — RatKing A striking outdoor performance inspired by urban mythology and hidden ecologies. Appearing throughout the afternoon, RatKing emerges unexpectedly within the landscape, offering audiences a surreal encounter between performance, environment and character. Brigid Morgan — Reliquary, Darling A durational installation performance exploring transformation, ritual and post-reproductive femininity. Visitors move freely through an immersive environment of sculptural objects, sound and performance, experiencing an artwork that continually evolves over the course of the festival. HillsceneLIVE isn't a traditional theatre event, it's an afternoon of discovery. Your festival ticket gives you access to the whole venue, with performances, installations, sound works and interactive experiences happening across multiple spaces. There’s no reserved seating — you can wander, explore and create your own HillsceneLIVE experience. Intro Track: Paprika Pony, Kim Gordon, No Home Record, 2019 Todays interview on Art Matters was JD Mittmann, Curator and Manager of collections at Burrinja Cultural Centre. We talked about the Acquisitive Award Exhibition as a part of the Burrinja Climate Change Biennale #4. The Acquisitive Award Exhibition sits at the heart of BCCB#4, showcasing an inspiring and thought-provoking collection of works that respond to the urgent conversations surrounding climate change and the environment. Featuring both local and nationally recognised artists, the exhibition will involve more than 40 artists from across Australia who have been selected to participate through an application process. The exhibition presents a diverse range of contemporary practices across painting, photography, sculpture, installation, digital and new media, bringing together Victorian and interstate artists in a powerful exploration of art, ecology and the future of our planet. Art Matters #60 - Sammi Edney and Yianni Johns Intro Track: Paprika Pony, Kim Gordon, No Home Record, 2019 This week on Art Matters, I spoke with artists Sammi Edney and Yianni Johns, a father–daughter duo presenting their upcoming joint exhibition - That little something Xtra!  at Frater Gallery, a part of the Victorian Artists Society in East Melbourne. I was delighted that Sammi brought in a piece she had just finished and will share an image via the Art Matters socials @artmatters_97.1fm We chatted about both artists individual creative practices, Sammi a tattooist and fine artist with the genre of imaginative-realism and Yianni an long standing artist and curator with the genre of pseudo-symbolism. We spoke of the influences and connections that run between their work, and how the opportunity to exhibit side by side came about. We also chatted about what it means to share a creative life across generations—those unique family moments and memories that create the life we share and how that comes into what is going to be a really special joint exhibition. Art Matters #59 - Maddie Reece - Museum Exhibitions Curator at Yarra Ranges Regional Museum Intro Track: Paprika Pony, Kim Gordon, No Home Record, 2019 Today Adriana Alvarez interviewed Maddie Reece from the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum about the current exhibition showing - GONDWANA VR. They chatted about Gondwana VR and how it is an immersive and interactive virtual-reality experience that invites you to discover the world's oldest tropical rainforest, the Daintree Rainforest in Far North Queensland, Australia. We discovered that the experience for viewers changes every time you visit as each day Gondwana VRis different and unrepeatable. In this durational experience the rainforest gently unfurls offering viewers time to reflect on the change and loss of this irreplaceable ecosystem. Weather, seasons, and biodiversity shift as you navigate a vast map of ancient trees, rugged mountains and idyllic beaches. But a broader narrative stirs below: over the course of each showing, the rainforest degrades, artistically rendering climate data projections up to the year 2090. The only salve to this seemingly inevitable decline is people - the more time an audience spends in Gondwana, the more resilient the forest becomes. They also talked about how Gondwana VR was developed by artists Emma Roberts and Ben Joseph Andrews over approximately four years and is presented at Yarra Ranges Regional Museum as part of the 2026 Burrinja Climate Change Biennale - Burrinja.org.au for more details on that. They touched on how the experience for the viewer is interactive and about how technology has enabled a different kind of interaction with art in spaces like this.  Get along to see this while you can - as Maddie said we most likely wont have it shown in Victoria again for quite a while. In Tracey’s case, this means she sees colours and shapes whilst listening to, performing and creating music and her artwork is a reflection of the way she internally visualises these sounds. Tracey currently has a solo exhibition called 'Fly me to the Moon' showing at Magnet galleries in the Docklands with 12 individual pieces created on specialized papers from around the world. I Can’t Believe We're Still Protesting This! brings together four artists Natasja van Wyk - Nicole Kemp - Kelly K Sullivan and Empire of Stuff  as well as a few Anonymous contributors, whose practices examine the repeated return of political and social conditions that should already be behind us. Moving across textile, pattern, assemblage, repetition, and material tension, the exhibition considers protest not simply as a public event or symbolic gesture, but as an ongoing lived condition. At the core of the exhibition is the idea of repetition: repeated histories, repeated systems of power, repeated violences, repeated cultural pressures, and the repeated exhaustion of having to resist what should no longer need resisting. Feminism, war, political regression, consumer culture, and structural inequality all sit within this field. Rather than isolating these concerns into separate categories, the exhibition explores the ways they overlap and reappear through everyday life, through inherited structures, and through material experience. Across the exhibition, familiar forms and surfaces become unsettled. Pattern, cloth, decoration, accumulation, and domestic materials are transformed into sites of tension, critique, endurance, and refusal. Beauty is not treated as separate from politics, but as one of the ways power is carried, softened, normalised, or resisted. The works ask how bodies, homes, labour, memory, and objects absorb and reflect broader social realities. Jamie’s primary focus is the exploration of movement, flow, and his response to nature through abstract painting. He has also composed music for over 35 years, and his studio practice brings these two disciplines together. We listened to some of his music tracks and spoke about where life is at, after a journey into the world of throat and neck cancer, the treatment and the long recovery as well as how it has influenced his practice and life.
