Season 4 has come and gone, and now it's time for the recap!

Jenna and Kevin are back with their verdict on the season and their favorite songs, episodes, and couples, but will their favorites be the same as the fans? Not exactly! Yes, the votes are in, and the duo shares the results and fan comments!

Plus, they reveal if they think the show should have ended with season three and their nervous feelings about starting season five, knowing all the behind-the-scenes struggles and the painful loss they suffered.

And That's what you Really missed with Jenna.

And Kevin an iHeartRadio podcast.

Welcome to and That's what You Really miss Podcast Season four. This is voted by you, asked for you, and done for you. I don't know, I'm losing it here.

This is the vote of the people. What we did was we asked the interwebs favorite couples, favorite songs, favorite episodes, as for usual at the end, because I love my favorite thing is we bookend these seasons with asking your thoughts.

We got to know how you feel.

Yeah, and so we got some funny, funny results because obviously a lot of new things in this season, so there's a lot of music in this season. Jenna, how did you When we were coming into this season, we were told by all of you who watch and listen that season four actually overall more positive than negative, but probably like sixty forty yeah, I think split. Yeah, how do you feel now that you've seen it? Like where the people correct?

This is interesting because I really I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would because of the fans and you guys telling us not so great. Get ready, buckle up right, you adjusted your expectations. I did adjust my expectations, which is probably a good thing that said, I mean I did. I really enjoyed it. I love the music. I thought there were really good storylines here. I wasn't bored in any way. I wasn't like, Okay, let's get through this like there were real I was like attached to everybody that said, I do feel like this this season. And I think you've said this before. It feels like little dis jointed within the series and in the in the season, and then in the episodes, Like we were going through some of this fan voting and I was looking back at some of these episodes and I was like, what did drumosar was this? And what song was here? And oh that was the same episode, And so it felt a little broken.

To me, because if you can look at the first three seasons and like producer Sam she was saying this, like if you recalled any of those episode titles, you could say what happens in those episodes. I feel like and like each season had like a certain overall vibe or story going on. We're like this one did feel a little over the place. I enjoyed most of these episodes, So yeah, exactly felt like it was enjoyable and different.

You know.

It was a season of change, is correct. It was a season of in with the new, a little less of the old right, and the old people doing new things.

Our little birds have left the nest and they are off on an adventure. There people are there are no people like parents who are calling. They're not calling themselves empty nesters anymore, but they've changed it to something else. I can't remember what it's called. Free birds is what people are calling it. So instead of empty nesters, they're free birds. That's fun. And so I'm saying that our oldies are free birds. That's right. Okay, sorry, I'm losing it today. You guys voted, Thank you for writing in. Let's start with the favorite episode voting results. Kevin, tell me what's up.

So I will say there was an overwhelming response in the top episode and the top song, and it's contrary.

To how we felt.

But I respect the people's opinion more than our own, and so we got to defer to you all.

So we'll start it with five. Five was.

And I agree with most of most of this. My list is, if not the exact same, it's very similar.

Yeah.

Number five is duet dynamic duets. Number four Guilty Pleasures.

It's like slightly surprising to me, but not because I agree, Okay, I have this one was slightly surprising. Number three was I do? Wow? Is it because everybody was back, like everybody was together? Probably?

But that makes sense, yes, and there's some iconic moments in this episode.

But interesting.

Yeah, yeah, I mean there's great numbers. Yeah, it's always like an event to get.

Everybody back together is always a great time. Totally. Number two.

Diva, Yes, yeah, absolutely, so this is like it wasn't close, right, it was not close.

I'm not surprised.

I don't know if Sam can verify this, but I believe this is probably the biggest disparity we've had thus far between number one and then the rest in terms of votes. Number one was the breakup, and Sam confirms, Wow, the breakup. I'm not surprised by that at all. The way that this was talked about, the way that this was even promoted, the song favorites, the groupings, it all makes sense to me. I don't feel like we agreed with this landslide, but I'm I understand it.

I understand it. People didn't like our opinions on it. I know what.

I think it's fair to absolutely say that you guys are I mean, our career because of much more invested in terms of like we can we can only be unbiased and associate to like an extent an extent, and so I feel like you know the care.

Is in your hands. Yes, agreed, try, I trust you. People have spoken. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we were wrong. It's all great. Well, then let's go through our picks, because I think they're fairly similar with a few variations.

I had a hard time ranking them me too, Like I have my probable top five.

But I don't know that I have a top one. Yes, exactly, Yeah, I agree with you.

No, I just I enjoyed these episodes so much.

If I had to pick a number one right now, I think it'd be deva. Yeah, but maybe that's just because I have so many memories of it. I don't know. Now I'm conflating my experience with my watching experience. But yeah, let's do it on the list, so I'll I'll just share what my list is, in no particular order. Sadie Hawkins, I really loved I thought that was a great one. Guilty Pleasures. Totally agree with the People. Dynamic Duets absolutely agree with the people. Diva absolutely and Swan Song. We missed Swan Song. Interesting. I really liked Swan Song. What do you love so much about Swan Song? There was something about it that felt like Finn was there. It was new, like he had he had kind of like taken over Glee Club. He was going through a lot. Like I feel like there was a lot of really good cohesive storyline in this episode led by Cory m h and the songs felt I don't know, you liked it. I mean, it was a little weird to have Christmas in there, but Being Alive was in there, like Kurt storyline. I loved that one, and all that jazz was in there, and then Don't Dream It Over when you're closing with that, It's like it just felt like one of those feel good episodes. I had a journey and then I felt good at the.

End, and like the music was pretty cohesive. Yeah, there's some bangers in there. Yeah, I like that. I don't have that on mine. I four to the five are the exact same as yours. I have guilty pleasure pleasures. Diva Dynamic Duets Sadie Hawkins and Thanksgiving. Oh my gosh, I'm sure I'm shocked. I don't know who I am anymore. This is surprising for you, and it's not like the most finely tuned episode. I just had a great time and I love a Thanksgiving episode.

I feel that it's a big one and everybody's back together in Thanksgiving. It's funny that people didn't vote Sadie Hawkins and it's too one of our favorites.

I think that's one of those situations where we're completely unable to disconnect our real life experiences fair enough to the episode itself, because I think that was a lot of fun. We had a lot of fun. We got to do really fun numbers, people got to act insane.

We like that. I agree with that this is the favorite song.

Voting results, and again I agree with a lot.

Of this list. Yeah, this is it's clear like the top winners, and then there's a few variations on our ends, I think.

And the winner again not close, not close, but let's start number five, Jenna give it to us.

Number five is mine obviously, absolutely number four. This was a sleeper for you that this this time around love song people really love. I think people also really love this, the people singing this song, the trio, you know. Number three, let Me Love You. We've spoken about this many times this season. Number two, Nutbush City Limits, It's my it's our new Riverty Mountain Eye. Yeah, and number one the Scientist. I agree. There are a few honorable mentions as well. Yeah, and if we were going to do the top ten, I'll just rattle those off for you. New York state of Mind was there. That's surprising to me. Teenage do acoustic version, not surprising at all. Barely breathing love that one Homeward Bound Home. I think Sam and I were talking about this earlier. We were saying, I think it's it's not as much of the song as it is the nostal job everybody coming home and singing together and then being a which I agree with as well.

Yeah, my picks, I have Nutbush City Limits yep. And let Me Love You Until You Love Yourself and as one and two just unbelievable performances. Mine is number three yep. And and the breakup and oh my.

It was just I leave the camera on her face and yeah, you don't have to do anything totally both of them together. I anyway, you know, how I feel. I loved three. I love three. We know this, Yeah, we know this.

Give me the girls, give me the acapella. I mean, it's not just the girls. The boys are in it two, but.

It's actually only three of us. Well, it's just a girl, it's just you and boys.

Well, obviously what I remember from the song is you, Jenna, the.

Girls, Laurel. I love it. I have a time for five. Okay, it's time definitely, and for once in my life. Interesting, that's funny.

I have that an honorable mention though as well.

Okay at the ballet, Oh my god, who are you? I don't know who. I have no lurky time at the ballet. You're a changed woman, I.

Really am you. Guys, I think it's I think it's truthfully, those of you who like write in to tell us these things have adjusted how I look at this show, and I'm appreciating, appreciating it. I think at a deeper level.

Well, it's interesting you say that, because I feel like when people wrote in the overall thoughts, which we'll get to you later, we're going to rattle off a bunch, people were saying that we help them kind of relook at season four or what that's so special? Yeah, I know doing something okay for my picture for music are very similar to yours and to the people's obviously not Bush City. Limit is on there again. I don't really feel like I want to rank these, but if I had to, five is for once in my life, four is mine. Three is dark Side. I'm surprised I am on the dark side. You love I love it, I love it, I love it. I'm just I'm I'm in awe of how an I am of the song. I'm just so tickled by it. I didn't expect to like it this much. Number two is let Me Love You. The number one is not Bush Yeah. So close, yeah, very close. There's such a consensus this season, I know, favorite couples. It's hard because there's not that many.

No, so I think there's a lot of friendships, you know that I think we could talk about.

Yeah, and there are some couples or couples that are maybe in flux, but are still couples or couples.

I would like to read some of your guys' honorable mentions first, because.

Hilarious. I'm taking some of these.

Someone mentioned blam absolutely agree. They're in my Top five definitely Tina and Blaine, controversial, Kurt Santana and Rachel I think is a really strong contender. I was already and Kitty, Mikee and Mercedes, Kurt and his pillow. My favorite one is great seven, wrote me and Blaine Anderson. Here's my favorite one, Rachel and Cassandra and quote. But y'all aren't ready for that. We weren't, Sue Sylvester and her Trinidadian roots and none because they all broke up.

That is fair. That is a fair point. There is an episode that everybody loved so much called The Breakup. Okay, let's get to the favorite couples that people did actually vote on, and number five is Sam and Brittany Bram Finn and Rachel Finchel. We still got Finchell there going mm hmm curtain Blaine, of course. Plaine is number three, Number two, Britanna not suppressed at all. Number one Charlie Jake and Marley. Wow Charlie. I if I had to add to this list or edit this list at all, I would definitely include Blam Blam Love lamb and I would definitely include.

Kurt and his Pillow. I completely agree. I can any any day, I can swap the ranking of these.

I feel these worked really well.

What I really liked about some of these couples, I really liked the growth out of the breakup from Finchil, Britanna and Clane when we see them, especially Britanna. I in our finale episode recap, we mentioned how each time they sort of like check in with each other, they've just grown exponentially and sort of together at the same pace but in different ways. Yeah, and that was some of my favorite writing of the season. Really enjoyed that same with kurtin Blaine. They found like a really healthy way to coexist through a really emotional.

Torrential.

Sure it feels mature, and then I think Finchel had one of the best moments of the entire season when Finn showed up and told Brody Brody what was up and scared him. I love their phone calls throughout the season. Yeah, I'm a fan.

I like that too.

I think the Curt Santana Rachel dynamic and Santana with any character she's involved with, was also really great this season. She kept people on their toes.

Just popping in, saying some shit getting out. That's the way you you you keep yourself valuable. That's right.

At the end of season three, in the Q and A, we were asked, do we think Glee should have ended with season three? And we said, we'd let you know after watching season four.

So what do we think. That's a good question. I don't think it should have ended after season three. I take it back.

Yeah, I think season four was pretty good. I do not think the show should have ended. There was a lot of great stuff that happened this season.

I don't know why we kept saying that. I think we were also influenced.

Yes, the public consensus. There's nowhere we have gone. People we have, like anyone we've ever talked to, basically says they stopped watching after season three, and so I think that's where we probably got that from. I think it's hard when you have new people. We have new casts. I know how I feel when shows do that.

It's hard.

You have to give it another chance to get back into it and learn about these characters and start to care again. And that takes like a recommitment to the show you've already committed to, which I feel like is tiring and exhausting. Yeah, how are you feeling about going into season five.

I'm not excited about the very beginning. I'm looking forward to getting past that.

Yeah, But after that, I am excited because I was so pleasantly surprised by this season. Yeah that I'm ready to be pleasantly surprised. And if I'm not, I'm okay with that because I feel so much better knowing we got four solid seasons. Yeah, like's if the show completely goes off the rails after season four, I'm fine with that.

I'm nervous about five. I'm nervous because, obviously, for obvious reasons, the beginning of season five is weird. And then I feel like we're scrambling. And then when I say scrambling, I feel like everybody, characters, writers, creators are scrambling because our lead who was going to take us to the end of the series is gone. And I'm just scared that the heart of the show was gone. And I'm curious. I'm actually curious. I'm looking forward to watching because I hope I'm wrong. I'm just curious to see if that's true, because it feels like that for me. I feel that way in shooting it and being there, I felt that way. So I'm just curious to see if that translated through or if we were wrong. I would love to be proven wrong.

I think you're absolutely right. I think Season five as a whole has to be looked at within the context of what was going on in real life. Yeah, and the fact that those writers were able to turn out anything totally because it was a struggle to be honest for all of us crew, cast, writers, anybody in the production, because you're showing up to set in the place where we built our relationship with Corey is no longer there. You feel it every day and is the star of the show, one of the stars of the show. And the fact that you had to like be professional and do work within that environment was difficult. And the fact that anybody could and that we turned out anything is nothing short of a miracle, I think. And so even of season five, like the pressure is off, I think, because how could it be good?

Like or it's if.

If it is good, then oh my god, that's amazing. But if it's not, we were still making fun episodes and like we were all learning to like this new aspect of life and grieving and yeah, and it was great. We were the ones on screen but the people had to, like, the writers had to come up with new things, and Brad and Ryan and Ian all of a sudden had to figure out what the hell was happening to the show.

Well, if you've listened to this podcast at all, listen to the guest episodes at all, you'll know that, like, Corey was obviously the most beloved person between cast and crew, exactly. Obviously that's going to hit hard, you know, for everybody, and I think it makes so much even more sense now. So there was a.

Memorial held for Corey on the auditorium stage. Yeah it was weird, but not to get too deep into that, but the amount of executives Fox High people showed up and how upset they were because also what Corey meant to them, the relationships he had also built with them beyond just the professional relationship. And so yes, Corey's reach, much like Finn's reach in the show, actually was very deep on all levels of the Glee universe. And so season five was just wading through that very deep, uncomfortable water. And so like, you know, I think I'm going to if I can keep that perspective and if episodes aren't great, and also maybe that's probably that's probably why my association with what the Fox say is so extreme, because I was not in like the healthiest mental state during that time as well. Yeah yeah, yeah, Well, I mean think it's like, our show is so much about being positive and being uplifting and talking about things that aren't necessarily always talked about on network television, and sometimes it felt counterintuitive to be doing like uplifting positive things when you yourself.

Don't feel like that, right, It's hard to want to be there.

And so I think we just need to keep all of that, all of those complex things in mind as we go.

Forward and watch. Okay, before we go too forward, let's go back and listen to some of these overall thoughts that people shared about season four. This is a good one to start with because I think it encompassed what people were feeling when they prepped us for this season. And somebody said, it's not a bad season, it's just it was hard at first with the new characters. I feel it's very fair. This is also interesting. Pivotal season changed the vibe of the show, probably my least favorite season interesting, and I yeah, I get that, Like, if you don't like the new split and the new characters and Nyana and the change in the vibe of the show. That's not your jam. That makes total sense because it's true, and.

There was a lot of figuring out in real time that you could feel of, like how much time were we spending in New York? How much time do we dedicate to the new kids? Like, Yeah, and it's I think it's sometimes it's hard to watch that. Yeah, somebody said better than I remembered. Love that and also it's really good. A few faults along the way, but overall strong. Yeah, I think we agree with that.

I love these people were saying it's overheted. A lot of these actually people are saying overheted, it's actually really fun and comforting, overheted. I love season four.

Someone said the calm before the storm aka the mess of season five and six New York was.

The best part, better than season five.

There's a lot of split here because I see a lot of people are saying that they like season five. Like some people said this was the worst season and it gets better after this. They say they made Tina truly unhinged, and I love that.

Agree. Couldn't agree more. M Hm, this was a pretty good season. It doesn't beat season three though, and it's the last good season. Oh.

Somebody said it's honestly my favorite seas and it's chaos fun and I love the newbies in NYC and blam wow.

They also said she was cute, but she's not touching one to three fair. Yeah, I see, I see that train wreck. How are they paying for that loft? You know, some things we just don't know. We don't need to know the answer to that. So much potential, but they fumbled with a lot of the nonsensical stuff. Again, I did feel like, yeah, they were throwing a lot at the wall to see what might work. Mm hmmm, and a lot of we needed more Britanna agree, but I do. I did think the little that we did have was pretty great.

Somebody said this is my favorite Quentin Santana hooking up at the non wedding. Give me the HBO version of this episode. You know what I get why people have this episode as one of the favorites. Okay, yeah, we forget. It would be so much fun if Glee was on HBO or something like that.

Be wild. Overall, a good season falters after shooting Star, but picks up with the Steamy Wonder tribute app.

Someone said it was a good mix between high school and New York, but they tried too hard to recreate the og glee group, and I think we felt that at the beginning. But it did feel like they found their legs, you know, like.

Yeah, going on that one. Someone said maybe too different at the time, but great in retrospect, which I thought is interesting.

I think maybe if you know where it's going and you learn to like those characters, it's not so jarring now when you watch it. Yep, I mean best season ever. Loved all the characters and plots, different strokes, oh Rewatching it and hearing your memories has given me a new found love for season four, love that so scared for season five.

Already. And Tina were the glue to hold things together, to transition the new kids. It's so fude. I do think it was smarter than to keep some of us back. Yeah you had to, y why, Yeah, that would have been a way harder transition.

And you know what's interesting we I don't think we realized that at the time because we were always like fearful of like, oh god, they're gonna move everybody to New York. They're not going to need us anymore. Yeah, but the importance of having familiar faces usher in the new people. I don't think we realized our value or the character's value in that way. A grade my grade, and in hindsight it obviously makes a lot of sense. Underrated for sure. Overheted. I love the vibes, especially with the newbies Bangers season ten ten. I love the cozy vibe. Gives me some comfort. So many bangers interesting. Yeah yeah, someone just wrote Santana going to New York agreed a shift away from season three, but still had the glee, crazy and fun. Yeah yeah, I mean this fully tracks, I think with how we feel totally. It does feel different, but I'm still there for it.

Might have taken a second to warm up, but then you get you start to fall in love with both sides. Once you like lean into the change and vibe and tone. If that's your thing, it's definitely you warm up to it for sure. Well, I think that's the that's you get. You get the gist. It is very consistent.

Those are sort of like the three It's people either think it was overheated, m hmmm, they quite liked it, or now in hindsight, they like it more.

That's sort of thebes. Yeah. Absolutely, I am a little scared now for season five, but I think good thing to be a little scared, I think. Yeah.

I also think it's going to be to be real for a minute. It's going to be weird emotionally to watch it. It's going to be difficult. So good luck to us again. Keep in mind all the things that were going on on the outside. Yeah, I'm interested to see how we feel when we start watching it.

I know. Well, stay tuned. We still have some more season four wrap up and thank you for writing in and voting and sharing your thoughts with us.
