Robach and Holmes cover the latest news headlines and entertainment updates and give perspective on current events in their daily “Morning Run.”
When I see an actor I don't know, I just say I love your scene with Nicole Kidman. Nine times out of ten, I'm right. That line delivered by Steve Martin at last night's Emmy Awards, where one show won more Emmys than any in history.
I'm Amy Robot and I'm TJ. Holmes.
It's Monday, September sixteen, twenty twenty four, and let's head out for today's morning run. Another Trump assassination attempt, the second in two months. Kamala Harris meanwhile does her first one on one interview as the Democratic nominee.
And the Pope tells American Catholics how they should vote. Are Ben and Jen back on, and for the first time in three years, Prince Harry gets a message from the FAM AirPods okayed as hearing aids and Tito Jackson has died.
But first, let's start with President Trump fine and unharmed after what the FBI is calling an apparent assassination attempt. We simply could not believe, looking at our screens what we were seeing and hearing yesterday in news reports that this was happening again. The former president was on the golf course West Palm beach when the Secret Service spotted a muzzle, the muzzle level rifle sticking out of the bushes.
Now, the Secret Service opened fire but apparently missed the target. The suspect never got off a shot and was apprehended within minutes. He's now been identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, fifty eight years old. He's from Hawaii. An AK forty seven rifle, along with two backpacks, a scope, and a GoPro were all found with the suspect was spotted. He was about four hundred five hundred yards away from the president. And this all happened nearly exactly two months And we all remember this after that bullet grazed President Trump's ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. That shooter was killed at the scene by Secret Service.
But Secret Service of course.
Under fire for their handling of that, for allowing that shot to even go off in the first.
Of course, that Secret Service director at the time, she has since stepped down, lost her job over that incident in Butler, Pennsylvania. But again, Robes was a reminder that we are in a very heated and scary and dare we say violent political season. So is to see this happen happening again, questions about how this shooter even knew that the president was there. He did not have a public schedule, he wasn't so he was supposed to be relaxing. This was his off day on the campaign trail, and this has taken place. So that's going to be a major question to be answered as well.
It certainly is, and we have seen this happen before, but there are more calls to tone down the political rhetoric. This all comes, of course, at the end of a week where we saw the first and perhaps only debate between President Trump and Kamala Harris, and so political rhetoric of course reached the fever pitch again, as it often does, sides pointing rhetoric towards one another, and so a lot of politicians now saying everybody, please let this be Unfortunately another reminder that we can unintentionally inside violence sometimes with people who want, you know, certain actions to take place, and so we have to be careful on how we talk about these candidates in this season. This is disturbing, to say the very least, and we heard from the Biden administration, from Kamala Harris, everyone condemning any sort of political violence.
Yes, and Vice President Harris, for her part, did put out a statement saying she was quote thankful that the former president is safe and at a quote I condemned political violence. We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violencing quote. Meanwhile, some of her other statements over the weekend are getting attention. In particular, and interview she did this actually happened on Friday, and Robes it was a big deal.
It certainly was because this was actually her first one on one interview since she became the presumptive nominee two months ago. There were a lot of calls for her to do something like this.
We saw her.
She did sit down for an interview with CNN, but she was alongside her vice presidential candidate, Tim Walls, so it wasn't officially a one on one, But this one she decided to do with a local ABC affiliate in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania being a big swing state, a state that Democrats need to take. It was eleven minutes and a lot of different iterations and excerpts have been going out over the internet, and a lot of people have opinions about how she did, what she did say, and perhaps even more what she did not say.
This is going to be talked about not because of the details that were in it, but because of the lack of details that were in it, and also because of who she decided to do it with. There are people who are keeping active counts about how many days she's been the nominee and about how many interviews she's done compared to Trump in vance. On the other side, if this is their strategy, they have it, and that's fine on her side. But this goes in line now with a lot of the criticism that folks have had of her. When you do have her out there, when you do have her an interview, she doesn't seem like she is ready for prime time, no matter how sharp and polished she is and smart she is. Even there's something that continues to happen in interviews that comes off to a lot of people as awkward or simply, you have to be president, you have to be able to communicate on television, and she sometimes has difficulty. So the part that we'll get a lot of criticism is when the anchor asks for one or two specifics about how to bring down costs for Americans, and she immediately started about the neighborhood she grew up in and her mom, and a story that's familiar at this pointse based on what we saw at the Democratic Convention, based on what we saw at the debate as well, but she is now once again, I'm going to be facing some of those questions about a lack of specifics, and there's going to be a line. You go ahead, and we encourage everybody to listen to it for yourselves on the WPVII website, to the ABC affiliate, but asking for specifics about how to bring down costs ended up with an answer about growing up somewhere where people were proud of their lawns. A lot of people kind of scratching their heads. It's a political season. We know that her opponents are going to attack it, and her supporters are going to support her. But we shall see when the next interview will come. But this will continue to be a part of the campaign.
Yeah, and that Philly affiliate did put out the entire interview again, it was eleven minutes long, but there was some criticism as well as to what they actually aired on their station, and we should point out look we understand the constraints of local news and even what you have to do in terms of editing an interview to have it make air in the time that you needed to make air. So they chose to make it seem as though she answered the question directly when it took her a long time.
To get there.
But that's just the way local news works, and so we just wanted to point that out that that is something that happens all the time, and the full interview is available. We do encourage everyone to go and to listen to it. So we also heard from the Pope over the weekend telling American Catholics to vote for who they believe is the lesser evil, without mentioning either Canada by name. We heard from the Pope, of course, referring to former President Trump and Kamalahara, saying that both of them are against life, and both the one who throws out migrants and the one who kills children.
The Pope did not mince words here, saying to not welcome migrants quote is a sin. Also saying to send migrants away is quote something terrible. There is evil there. And also to send away a child from the womb of the mother is an assassination because there is life. Saying there are no butts involved.
To say he didn't mince words is an understatement. He did, however, urge Americans to vote. He said, no matter what, if you don't vote, it's not good, it's bad. You have to vote, and you have to choose the lesser evil. What is the lesser evil? He asks that woman or that man. I don't know. Each one in their conscience must think. And you know, this is a big deal. The Pope weighing in on American politics, and he's never been shy to do so. But there are fifty million Catholics in the United States that a lot of them focus in some of those swing states. So when the Pope speaks, Catholics listen. And I don't know that there is a directive here, but he certainly points out that there aren't good choices in this country right now. And I think that's going to leave a lot of Catholics scratching their heads, not knowing who to vote for.
A lot of folks are scratching their heads over some pictures they saw came out over the weekend. Don't think the Pope's going to comment on this one. But you never know. Ben and Jin together spot it together over the weekend, and Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck photograph alongside their kids at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, first time we have seen them publicly reunited and with their kids since j Lo files were divorced from Affleck. This happened on August twentieth.
So we have been watching this story unfold for months now, and no matter what Jennifer does or Ben does, if they're out in public, there are photos and there is speculation. So the speculation has gone wild, as you might imagine. One of the questions being asked, are they giving their relationship a third try?
The truth, No one knows.
You know, we have been really vocal about this sources thing that you see in a lot of publications because it is so generic and so well you can't point to exactly where the source is. And so yes, sources are saying no, that the meetup was just so that their kids could all hang out. Look, they've blended their families for two years, and apparently in a very lovely way, the kids have all gotten along and apparently miss each other. So reportedly j Lo and Ben came together so that the kids could hang out and meet up. Now, the outlet that got the picks, if you look at the pictures that are out there, it looks like Ben might be scowling or has an angry face.
They actually said, hey, we want.
To point out that there were plenty of pictures with him smiling, but they didn't circulate those. They didn't publish those because their kids were too prominent in the shots, which I appreciate because oftentimes you don't have publications considering that. At least, that's been a complaint by a lot of folks, certainly by myself as well, like when kids are involved, we shouldn't be circulating pictures of them. So they claim that's why they didn't put the pictures out. But folks more sources were saying inside the Polo lounge that Ben and Jennifer were holding hands. Someone even said they were kissing. You know what, I don't believe it. There are so many people who speculate and say they saw things, and then it gets out there and suddenly that's what's happened. You know. I think it's a nice thing at the very end of the day, that they were all coming together for their kids.
Period, point blank, and that's all that matters. And if there's hope for those two getting back together, I will forever be in support of Ben and Zen. We'll stay with us. Coming up, Prince Harry gets a happy birthday for the first time in years from his own family. Prince Harry has turned forty, and apparently it's big news that both King Charles and the Prince and Princess of Wales officially and publicly wish to Prince Harry a very happy fortieth on their official social media accounts on Sunday.
And you might not think it's a big deal for family members to wish each other happy birthday, but yeah, it's the first time that they have publicly acknowledged Harry's birthday in three years.
It's been since twenty twenty one.
So the post did come as a big surprise to a lot of folks because public birthday wishes are apparently reserved for working royals only. There are so many rules and so many official things to do and not to do when it comes to the royal family, so apparently this is one of them, and obviously folks are pointing out to this apparent rift that's been so publicized between Prince Harry and Prince William and then this alleged strained relationship with his father, King Charles. Look, I say reportedly and allegedly because no one again really knows what's going on within that family dynamic, but certainly that has been written about and talked about for years now, so these messages of birthday wishes are being viewed as a potential olive branch among the family. But certainly it's sad to see so much discord and so much speculation. Even if they are the Royals and they are a public family, there's still a family, and it still has to be tough to go through that in such a public way.
But perhaps this is some good news.
We will take it to see that family. Any sign of something positive publicly we will absolutely take. And some good news on the medical front, AirPods are now a legit medical device. You heard that correctly. Food and Drug Administration has approved Apple's hearing aid feature. This is a first of its kind, over the counter software device that's been approved now for use by the FDA.
WOW.
So with the software update, you're going to be able to first test your hearing and then you can adjust the settings on your AirPods that will amplify sounds for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.
That is remarkable.
So an estimated thirty million Americans will be impacted by this because they have hearing loss, but a very small percentage of those folks actually use hearing aids, and anyone, I mean, I remember when my grandfather went to go get hearing aids. The cost is always a factor. They are astronomical. So this is going to be compatible with AirPods pro to and will be released sometime this fall and could be a huge and this could be a remarkable, remarkable achievement for folks who have not financially been able to afford some of these higher priced hearing aids. So this is I'm impressed Apple keeps doing it.
And it wasn't too long ago the FDA approved to remember those over the counter hearing aids when a lot of folks thought those were cost prohibitive as well. But applaud it's something that so many of us have already that you could possibly use to help your hearing. So we absolutely take our hats off to Apple on the FBA from making this happened.
That's amazing some sad news to pass along. Tito Jackson has died at the age of seventy. This according to his family. He was, of course a founding member of the Jackson Five and brother to pop icon Michael I'll be there, I Want You back, ABC, the Love You Save, all.
Those Jackson five classics. Tito was a part of, a big part of.
He was a big part of, but unfortunately in pop culture he usually became the butt of a lot of jokes over the years, and he actually commented that these jokes impacted him and really stung because he was the lesser known member of the Jackson five, but he was actually the guy perhaps with the most memorable name, Tito. He and his brothers continued to perform in recent years. I actually didn't even realize that they had live shows all over the world, even some recently on the schedule. He is the first Jackson brother to pass after Michael, which was back in two thousand and nine. And a lot of people will remember Robes the image of Tito. We know Tito. He was the guy on stage with the guitar. He was that guy that they didn't allow him to incorporate his guitar into some of the recordings at the time, but later he added it to some of the live shows. And he is the guy holding the guitars.
Yeah, yeah, and you know it is crazy.
I was reading Michael Jackson, as you mentioned, his brother passed in two thousand and night at the age of fifty. I forgot how young Michael was when he died, and so yes, Tito at the age of seven. We don't have any details surrounding his death us simply that he passed, but we certainly wish his family the best and certainly those who love him.
And his legacy, his music, his guitar will live on.
Also, last evening, the Emmys, the biggest night in televisions ever.
They call it, yes, the biggest night in television.
And so a lot of folks today are going to be turning the TV's on trying to stream Showgun. Our hands are raised the FX drama. It's a subtitle Japanese period drama, which is amazing in of itself that it has now won more Emmy Awards than any show in a single season, eighteen. Among those awards Outstanding Drama, Outstanding Actor, Outstanding Actress. They just absolutely cleaned up and you have to remember this is not a show that's in English. Yeah, and it is now a huge, huge hit.
One of the winners choked on stage that yes, it's a subtitle Japanese period drama that surrounds a poetry competition. It's just not something that you would think would sell and certainly be the hit it was. But I know TJ You've been wanting to watch it for ages now, so this is absolutely no excuse. Now we must the winners. By the way, in those two acting became the first Japanese actress to win in those categories, so that's a huge, big first. And the biggest surprise of the night at the Emmys Hacks beating out the heavily favored The Bear for Best Comedy Series. This was I think this is Hack's third season, so they've been up for it before, so they finally won, and that was a big surprise for a lot of folks who are expecting the Bear to win that category. And the Bear, we should mention, did not go home empty handed. The show, along with Baby Reindeer, were both big winners at the evening. They both took home four awards a piece. We watched Baby Reindeer, I think that's probably maybe the only we had. Don't watch a lot of the television series that we saw up at the Emmys, so now we have those to include in our list of watching habits.
But Baby Reindeer, we did watch that.
In fact, I think Sabine finished it.
It was it was, it was fascinating.
Uh, look we are We're always like this forward shows, whether it's The Oscar or Enemies. So we need to go watch that, We need to go watch that. So but truth be told, if it's not Love Island or Nine Day Fiance, I ain't seen it on TV late because it's all y'all got me watch
