Why Red States Are Cutting Taxes While Blue States Go After Billionaires

You’re listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avalone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for October 27, 2026.

We start the show with Gavin Newsom’s recorded remarks that the Democratic Socialists of America will be the mainstream force in the Democratic Party going forward. We talk about whether that’s real analysis or just a politician reading the wind on the way to a presidential run, and we look at a new Americans for Prosperity report from eight battleground states. Swing voters there view the DSA unfavorably by roughly three to one, but more of them trust Democrats than Republicans to lower living costs. We also dig into why socialism and free speech have never coexisted.

In the Top 3 Things You Need to Know, the FBI raids a Beverly Hills home owned by a campaign donor and friend of former Congressman Eric Swalwell. The Department of Justice charges 48 non-citizens with illegally voting in elections from 2020 through 2024. The Supreme Court also hands the Trump administration a win on immigration, rejecting an appeal from Baltimore, New Haven, and Columbus over the rule barring immigration courts from dismissing cases en masse.

After the break, a South Korean study finds plastic straws had the lowest environmental impact of four straw types, which gets us talking about what “follow the science” really means. Then our American Mamas, Teri Netterville and Kimberly Burleson, join us to answer the question: what characteristic do you enjoy most in the people around you?

Next comes a very serious theological question: when exactly do you say grace at a Mexican restaurant, before the chips and salsa or before the entrees? Then we get into Digging Deep, where we walk through the tax measures on the ballot this fall. Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Wyoming have proposals to cut or limit taxes, while California and Colorado ask voters to raise them, including a one-time wealth tax on billionaires in California. We also look at who controls each of those state governments.

We then turn to the killing of 60 Christians in Ethiopia and ask why so few Americans have heard about it. For our Bright Spot, Tesla’s new safety data shows how many miles drivers go between major collisions with and without active safety features and Full Self-Driving. We also take on Congressman Ro Khanna’s claim that the government deserves credit for what American entrepreneurs build. We close with a Moment of Whoa: the dedication of the new Desert Storm / Desert Shield Memorial on the National Mall.
