For decades, surfboard designer and shaper Greg Webber has questioned the basic theories of surfboard design: the impact of water flow, how curves and bottom contours work together, and ultimately, how we can build a board that allows a surfer to move more efficiently through water and on a wave.

Some of his ideas have been controversial, some misunderstood, and some well ahead of their time. But Greg has never been afraid to ask why a surfboard works, and that curiosity has taken him down some pretty fascinating rabbit holes.

So today, we’re going to get into design, hydrodynamics, experimentation, and the evolution of the surfboard as he knows it. We may even challenge a few long-standing theories along the way.

Greg and I worked together for about a decade during the early part of my professional surfing career, and I credit him with teaching me some of the key fundamentals of surfboard design.
