Like a buffer zone between the land and the ocean, mangroves serve a multidimensional function for the ecosystems along coastal areas in the world.
Mangroves, found in over 100 countries worldwide play a vital role in combatting climate change; as their soils act as effective carbon sinks that lock away large quantities of carbon dioxide, and stopping it from entering the atmosphere.
In the program this week we speak to a marine and fisheries Ecologist as we pay a visit to a mangrove forest in Mombasa, Kenya, where we hear the importance of mangroves and their role in the ecosystems of the coastlines.
