The Role of Cooperatives in the Agricultural Sector in East and Southern Africa

A co-operative is an independent private business association of individuals who are at once the members and the consumers of the goods they produce and or the services they provide.

But what is the role of co-operatives in reducing cost for farmers especially the small-scale farmers in Africa?

In the program this week we speak to Steven Muchiri, President of the East African Farmers’ Confederation, and Benito Elias Programmes Manager at Southern African Confederation of Agriculture Unions (SACAU), who share their views on the status of cooperatives in their respective regions and whether or not cooperatives can be the game changer in as far as beneficiations of farmers in the region is concerned.
