New eSafety Commission research reveals nearly one in five young adults see tracking a partner's location as normal in a relationship. The study of 2000 adults linked location sharing to a higher risk of coercive control.  Director of DV Safe Phone, Ashton Wood, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "The two you mentioned, which was Life360 and Find My iPhone, they're the two most common ones that most people put them on to just keep their family safe." "When it becomes expected as opposed to just something for safety. That's when you start getting concerned." "There's also ways to track phones, no matter how many times you reset them. So a lot of perpetrators know this. That's why they've been talking in Queensland about laws,  around this sort of technology-facilitated abuse, which I think is a really good idea," Mr Wood continued. 

Gilmour Space Technologies' attempt to become the first to launch an Australian-made rocket into orbit from Australian soil. However, this has been delayed until tomorrow morning. CEO of Gilmour Space Technologies, Adam Gilmour, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "We had an electrical problem with a trolley system that connects power to the rocket when it isn't in, when it is in standalone mode, and we use that to test all the electrical systems before we fill it with rocket fuel, and then put it in standalone mode where it's on its own battery systems. And so this thing failed." "It was working the day before, and it's been working for ages. And as it does, [it] fails right before launch. But we identified it and within about six hours we'd fixed it. And so we're kind of back on schedule again." "But because we've got launch windows that are only in the day, we've missed the ability to launch this afternoon. So we have to go now for tomorrow morning's launch window," Mr Gilmour continued.

The Beep Test was created in the 1970s, and has been a staple of high school PE classes since.  But, with the digital age creating different fitness trackers and apps, is it outdated?  Exercise science expert from Griffith University, Dr Joel Garrett, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "The story at the end of the day, it is still a very good test." "It is still low cost, it's easy to implement in a vast different varieties, and it can give you a really good indication of VO2 max, but it certainly has its limitations and it might not always be applicable in every environment," Dr Garrett continued. 

Donald Trump has unveiled a deal with Saudi Arabia, spanning defence, energy, security, technology, and minerals.  However, the President is coming under fire for accepting a Boeing 747 from the Qatari Government.  CEO of Intelligent Risks, Neil Fergus, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "It is quite huge." "This is expected to go from the current signed deals for $300 billion to nearly $1 trillion over the next 3 to 4 years." "[A] large part of it is an arms deal where the Saudis will be provided with air and missile defense systems, including $20 billion of artificial intelligence tools for military purposes," Mr Fergus continued. 

The Queensland Government has launched the 'All the Best' campaign, which celebrates the state's favourite produce and places.  Queenslanders across the state are encouraged to vote for their local 'bests' across 15 categories, with the winners to be announced on Queensland Day.  Food and Cultural Editor at the Brisbane Times, Matt Shea, joined Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons to share his Queensland favourites. 

The fallout of the federal election continues, with Labor winning 93 seats with three yet to be called.  Labor and the Nationals have retained their leaders, while the Liberal Party has elected a new leader, and the Greens are yet to decide.  Independent researcher, Dr Scott Prasser, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "I regard this as a pretty major shift in Australian politics. A Labor Government getting one of the biggest majorities in their history and the non-Labor side of politics really been routed." The continuing emergence of the independents, Teals, [and] Greens are still there despite some of the losses. "I think we've got a big shift going on both politically and where we're going as a country. So I think this is a pretty important election more than what a lot of us expected," Dr Prasser continued.  

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo will celebrate its 75th anniversary at Suncorp Stadium in 2026 with 'The Heroes Who Made Us.'  Artistic Director of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Alan Lane, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "So it's our 75th year. So the heroes who made us, first of all, talks to the heroes who have made 75 years of shows." "So our performers, our volunteer performers in the tattoo performers, the military performers, our audiences, our international guests, all of that stuff." "But the second thing I think, is that the thing that both Jason [Barrett] and I really wanted to talk about, which is this salute to service, that there are people in our communities who bind them together, who whether they're volunteers or military or blue light or however they serve their communities, they serve them," Mr Lane continued.  "They set the standard by how they live their lives, and we want to honour them as well in this 75th year."

Woolworths has announced price reductions on almost 400 products, which will remain lowered until at least 2026.  But, does that mean that shoppers will see significant discounts? Retail and Consumer Behaviour Expert at QUT, Gary Mortimer, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "What your listeners will start to notice is that these price discounts or declines aren't significant. They may only be $0.50 or $0.60, they may only be a dollar at most." "But what they're doing is they're looking at the types of products that most shoppers will put into their basket or trolley each week, and they're lowering them over a longer period of time." "I mean, what the research shows is, is that, you know, we're not necessarily looking for the very high, very low pricing that's always sort of jumping up and down. It's sort of it's not very consistent," Mr Mortimer continued.

More than 1,000 health and welfare experts reviewed Queensland's domestic discipline laws, and have found smacking children should be against the law.  The Queensland Law Reform Commission is proposing the banning of corporal punishment that injures a child and the banning of force applied to the child's head, face, or neck.  Associate Professor at the University of Queensland's Centre for Mental Health Research and member of the Queensland Child Death Review Board, Divna Haslam, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "We're calling for a public health campaign to really tell parents the harms associated with smacking and physical discipline, and really highlighting the need for diversion principles." "So parents that are engaging in particularly the more severe ends of corporal punishment, get support and parenting advice rather than criminalisation."

New research from Snapchat has revealed that nearly half of Australians don't have a best friend.  Social researcher and generations expert, Dr Claire Madden, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "This research that Snapchat did on looking at the state of Australian friendships today found that we still really value friendships, as in the ones where we catch up with people over a meal and build those friendships." "But it showed that 44% of Australians say they don't have that one best friend, that one priority bond that we might have assumed people have." "So perhaps we've replaced that with a wider circle of friends that we depend on," Dr Madden continued.

Following the aftermath of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, James Cook University partnered with Natural Hazards Research Australia to investigate the extent of destruction. The report revealed a popular building technique used on fairly modern high rises in Brisbane and across the South-East had the potential to turn balcony pavers into deadly missiles. Chief Engineer of the James Cook University Cyclone Testing Station, David Henderson, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "We did dodge a bullet with the wind speeds just being that 100km an hour." "But what it was showing is that those wind speeds, which is about 50% of the design, wind speed for that area, things were just starting to potentially go wrong." "So it's something we really need to pay attention to, look at revisiting how the building standards say that you can design and affix them in and then look to basically putting some fixings to hold them in place," Mr Henderson continued. 

Tonight, the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre will host the annual Candle Lighting Vigil to remember those who lost their lives to family and domestic violence.  The speakers will include Minister for Child Safety and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Amanda Camm, and Acting Queensland Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy.  The vigil will begin at 5:30pm at the Sky Room and Terrace. 

New data has revealed that over 3000 firearms were reported stolen in the past five years, and more than 2000 remain unaccounted for in Queensland. There are around one million firearms legally registered in the state. Associate Professor of criminology at Bond University, Dr Terry Goldsworthy, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "I don't think it's got more relaxed. I mean, if you look at Australia." "I was writing a book chapter on the militarisation of our police and our ownership of firearms in Australia sits at about, you know, 15 firearms per 100 head of population." You compare that to the US. They sit at about 120 firearms per 100 head of population. So we're still far off what the US has got," Dr Goldsworthy continued. 

Ezra Mam has served his nine-match suspension after being charged with drug driving. Although Mam was eligible to play for the Broncos this weekend, Wide World of Sports host Peter Psaltis revealed he has not been selected. 

Surf Life Saving Queensland is urging beachgoers to swim between the flags at monitored beaches.

Tony, Emmy, and Grammy-nominated artist Josh Groban is releasing his newest album, 'Gems.'  The 18-track album is a hand-picked collection of his favourite songs with two new additions, “Be Alright” and “Open Hands." Mr Groban told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "You record a bunch of songs and you just have absolutely no idea what word or series of words will describe the year you've been through." "We just kind of thought, you know, as we were talking about it, you know what? What is it we want to call these, kind of gems of your career?" "You always want to put in a couple of things that,  haven't heard before. These are songs that I wrote over the last couple of years. So, I hope they [fans] enjoy them," Mr Groban continued.

Magic Round has officially begun in Brisbane, and 2025 will be the biggest year yet.  The round is officially sold out, with around 180,000 fans expected to attend the event. General Manager of Suncorp Stadium, Alan Graham, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "It's been a long time in the planning, and it seems to get bigger every year." 'We're just looking at the northern plaza, which is on Caxton Street. There's hardly a square inch of space that's not been occupied by some sort of display or activity. The NRL do go all out. "It really does create a very entertaining atmosphere for everyone. And, full credit, the NRL for making the effort," Mr Graham continued.

After a rise in deaths and serious injuries on e-scooters, the state government has launched a parliamentary inquiry to improve safety for riders and pedestrians.  This follows a sharp increase in injuries involving personal mobility device riders, which has more than doubled over the last three years.  CEO of Pedestrian Council of Australia, Harold Scruby, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "I sat on the e-scooter committee back in 2020, in New South Wales, we had every key stakeholder on board." "We unanimously recommended the following major points one, minimum age of 17. Two, a driver's license. Three, a form of number plate. Four, some form of insurance. Five, not on any footpaths. Six maximum speed on shared paths ten." "Now, if you look right around the nation, no one yet has embraced this idea that we should have a license," Mr Scruby continued.

Cyber intelligence firm Dulvn has revealed that 31,000 passwords belonging to online accounts at Australia's Big Four banks have been exposed.  At least 14,000 Commonwealth Bank, 7,000 ANZ, 5,000 NAB, and 4,000 Westpac customers' passwords are available on Telegram and the dark web. Senior Application Security Engineer at Dvuln, Noah Farmer, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "If you do think you're affected by an Infostealer, the best thing to do is keep everything up to date." "You can install antivirus and anti-malware software, but that alone is not a silver bullet." "The best thing to do is to be vigilant for any signs of compromise...make sure you have a clean device to access your accounts," Mr Farmer continued. 

The Ten Tenors hit the high notes in 1995 in Brisbane and have since soared to global fame. After performing more than 3,500 shows, The Ten Tenors have kicked off their 30th anniversary world tour.  Two of The Ten Tenors, Sam Ward and Cameron Barkley told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "This is the first tour that we've been to every state in Australia as well. So we're doing 27 cities, I think 40 shows over 27 cities. And we're going to every state for the first time." "It's a 30th birthday party, essentially. So it's a celebration of the whole 30 years of the group. So we've got all those classical roots that you've started with. It is a celebration at the end of the day. So we do have a bit of a party as well."

The Mood of the Nation report reveals how Australia feels about issues facing the country. SEC Newgate, Research Partner, David Stolper, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons,  "We've seen a marked change since February, so we've currently got 42% of Australians thinking the Labor Party will be the best party to deal with cost of living versus only 24% for the coalition." "So we've seen an 11% increase in the belief that the Labor Party is the best party to deal with cost of living." "I think while the coalition has been able to elevate concern around cost of living, I think they've been less effective in presenting themselves as a party that will do any better when it comes to that key issue," Mr Stolper continued. 

Queensland's tourism board has celebrated the launch of a tourism campaign with a new video featuring singer Kita Alexander singing a remake of Madonna's 1980s single Holiday.

The Kokoda Track was a crucial route taken during World War II. The trail's challenging terrain and significant battles make it an important piece of Australian history. Founder of Adventure Professionals, Glen Azar, told Dean Miller on 4BC Afternoons, "We just finished the Kokoda Track crossing yesterday, and we had dawn service at Bomana War Cemetery." "A lot of people may not realise, it's the biggest war cemetery in the Southern hemisphere, and it's the biggest individual Australian war cemetery in the world." "As a former soldier of 17 years, that's pretty special to me alone and a great place for the trekkers to finish their trek." “It's a physical, mental and emotional journey. You're learning a lot about the country. You're learning a lot about how important this battle was to Australia at the time.”

Tomorrow, Super Hornets and Growlers will roar over Brisbane in tribute to Australians and New Zealanders who served.  Lieutenant Peter Bergin from 1 Squadron, based at RAAF Amberley near Ipswich, will be flying the Super Hornet over Brisbane.  Lieutenant Bergin told Dean Miller on 4BC Afternoons. "It's quite an honour to put on the Air Force uniform and to put on a flight suit every day." "I have to pinch myself sometimes that they trust us to be able to fly a Super Hornet around the city, and potentially in conflict for our nation as well," Lieutenant Bergin continued. 

A local Facebook group has shared that some taxi drivers refuse service or behave rudely toward passengers who live close to the Brisbane Airport. Dean Miller said on 4BC Afternoons, "It's not the passenger's fault. People have a right to go home, whether it's five minutes away or 50." "In an age where rideshare apps are just a tap away. Behaviour like this drives people away from traditional taxis and scratching their heads wondering why people are doing it." "Honestly, who could blame people for doing such?" Dean continued.
