South Africa’s regulator has already announced 18 recalls, spanning contaminated food, medical supplies, and safety defects in vehicles. However, this is not necessarily a sign that the market is being flooded with substandard products. For context, the UK  with a similar population  has recorded nearly 3,000 recalls over the same period. This is largely due to stricter reporting requirements, particularly for pharmaceuticals, as well as a bigger market for processed consumer goods.
