Relebogile Mabotja speaks to South Africa's first certified female football referee and founder SheRef Foundation, Akhona Makalim, about her inspirational journey towards becoming a pioneer and history-maker in South African football. From overcoming systematic adversity that curtailed her dream of being part of Banyana Banyana to taking an unlikely path towards referring - Makalima alchemised her failures and used them as a stepping stone towards greatness. "My gender is not a disability", she says and now qualifies in the men's refereeing division. SheRef Foundation is a platform that develops future female referees and advocates for gender parity within the sport of football.
