John chats to Dr. Nomathemba Chandiwana, Chief Scientific Officer of the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation, about the latest StatsSA mortality data, which shows that diabetes mellitus has officially surpassed HIV and tuberculosis to become the most common underlying natural cause of death in South Africa.

According to the data, diabetes caused 27,000 fatalities in 2023 alone. The numbers show a dramatic change in the nation's disease burden, with non-communicable diseases now accounting for a larger portion of deaths.
