South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa gave his state of the nation address in parliament on Thursday. Among the issues Ramaphosa addressed were the country’s embattled state-owned entities (SOEs), such as Eskom and South African Airways (SAA), and unemployment. Ramaphosa announced that financially viable municipalities can now procure their own electricity from independent power producers. He further announced a list of seven measures to rapidly increase the capacity of energy generation outside state utility Eskom.
