Young leaders gather in Johannesburg for an HIV and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights summit

Law enforcement authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remain on high alert following the overnight escape of an estimated 50 inmates from Luebo Prison, in Kasai Province between Thursday and Friday. Luebo Territorial Administrator Jean Tshiawuke wa Tshiawuke said security personnel are suspected of aiding the jailbreak, allowing all the prisoners to escape. He warned that several of the fugitives are considered dangerous and could pose a significant threat to public safety. Spanish authorities say most of the estimated 60,000 migrants who stormed Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta have voluntarily returned to Morocco. The developments come ahead of a meeting of European Union (EU) ministers later this week to coordinate the bloc's response to the crisis in the Spanish enclave. Meanwhile, Spain's Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, says the death toll linked to the border crossings has risen to at least 67 as of Saturday. He warned that the number could increase, with fears that there may be additional casualties on the Moroccan side of the border. The Western Cape High Court in South Africa is hearing a legal challenge by the Democratic Alliance (DA), a member of the Government of National Unity (GNU), against the Expropriation Act. The party is seeking an order declaring certain provisions of the Act unconstitutional and invalid, arguing that the law was adopted through a flawed and procedurally unfair process. They also say that parts of the legislation are vague and infringe on the constitutional protection of property rights. President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Expropriation Act into law in January 2025. Lulu Gaboo spoke to Professor Ruth Hall, the Director of the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies, at the University of the Western Cape.
