Young leaders gather in Johannesburg for an HIV and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights summit

Zimbabwe has been elected to serve a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), beginning in January 2027. The Southern African nation will replace Somalia, whose term expires on 31 December 2026, and will join the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Liberia as part of the African members, commonly known as the "A3". 

The country is expected to align closely with the African Union's positions and advocate for AU-led approaches to addressing conflicts and security challenges across the continent. This marks Zimbabwe's third stint on the Security Council, having previously served as a non-permanent member in 1983-1984 and again in 1991-1992.

Lulu Gaboo spoke to Dr Alexander Rusero, the Director for the Institute of Peace, Leadership & Governance at Africa University in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe elected to serve a two-year term as a non-permanent member of UNSC

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is on a three-day state visit to Russia, meeting President Vladimir Putin at a time when her government's relations with the West are under strain. Western diplomats and human rights groups have accused her administration of involvement in the killing of hundreds of people during election-related unrest last October, as well as a wave of abductions and killings of government critics in the lead-up to the polls, allegations her government has denied.

The visit is the first by a Tanzanian head of state to Russia since independence leader Julius Nyerere travelled to Moscow in 1969. During a televised meeting at the Kremlin, Hassan described the trip as "historic."

South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa is hosting his Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

The two heads of state aim to strengthen bilateral relations between Nairobi and Pretoria, while also promoting business partnerships and exploring ways to unlock the full potential of trade and investment between the two countries.
