The Nigeria Union of Teachers has called on school teachers in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite withdrawal of services over the continued captivity of teachers and pupils abducted during an attack on schools in Oriire.

The mass abduction occurred on May 15, when armed men abducted 39 students and seven teachers in an attack targeting several schools in Nigeria's southwestern Oyo State. Mass kidnappings by armed groups have become a serious security challenge in Nigeria in recent years.

Zimbabwe's Parliament is expected to debate a Constitutional Amendment Bill today that would extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's term by two years, allowing him to remain in office until 2030. The proposed amendments also seek to replace direct presidential elections with a system in which the president is elected by Parliament.

Political analysts expect the bill to pass, given that ZANU-PF holds a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly and effectively controls the Senate through traditional leaders and other aligned representatives. This gives the ruling party the numbers needed to amend the constitution.

Zimbabwean Parliament to debate a Bill that would allow President Mnangagwa to remain in office until 2030

South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed the strong ties between Pretoria and Nairobi, describing the relationship as longstanding, cordial and mutually beneficial since it was re-established in 1994. In a statement ahead of Kenyan President William Ruto's visit to SA, Ramaphosa said Pretoria regards Kenya as a strategic partner in East Africa and across the continent.

The visit comes amid recent speculation about relations between the two countries following Ruto's absence from a G20 meeting hosted by SA and Ramaphosa's decision not to attend the Africa-France Summit held in Kenya.
