The Harare City Council has announced that it plans to demolish more than 5,000 houses built on supposedly illegal settlements. The targeted houses are mostly in high-density suburbs such as Kuwadzana, Budiriro, Glen View, and Mabvuku and were built on land reserved for public amenities like schools and clinics. Harare City Mayor, Jacob Mafume says the planned demolitions are in line with 37 High Court orders obtained by the City Council and private individuals to evict illegal settlers. In 2021, a satellite captured images of vast stretches of barren land as it passed over the Niger Delta. This site, near Port Harcourt, was on the United Nations Environment Programme's list for cleanup, with plans to restore it to the fertile farmland it once was before thousands of oil spills ravaged the region, turning it into a symbol of environmental devastation.  However, instead of the expected restoration, the area was left as a desolate "moonscape," deemed unusable for farming, according to U.N. documents officials described Nigeria's cleanup efforts as a "total failure." This was after it was revealed that the stores sell counterfeit condoms. The movement has since urged the public to use government-issued condoms to prevent the dangers inherent in counterfeit condoms.
