China has commended three African countries for denying overflight access to Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te's aircraft.

This move ultimately forced him to cancel his planned visit to Eswatini. Beijing praised the decisions by Seychelles, Mauritius and Madagascar, which the Taiwanese government says had initially granted but later revoked the permission for the flight to pass through their airspace.

Despite the setback, Lai has insisted he will not be intimidated by pressure from China.

He had been scheduled to visit Eswatini, one of only 12 countries that maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, which China regards as part of its territory.
