South Africa's Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, has stated that gang-related violence requires a different approach. He specifically mentioned the Western Cape province, which recorded the highest number of gang-related murders, accounting for 263 murders in the first quarter of the 2024/25 financial year.
Speaking to the media in Pretoria on Friday, Mchunu highlighted the need for a change in approach to tackle gang-related crimes, including a review of policing in high murder zones.
Police leadership is scheduled to meet next Thursday to develop new strategies to combat murder and the illegal firearms that are often used in these crimes. Lulu Gaboo spoke to Channel Africa reporter, Dimakatso Leshoro, for more insights.
