South Africa’s international reputation is under growing scrutiny following recent anti-migrant marches across several major cities. The country’s Justice Minister and Chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has acknowledged that the demonstrations are damaging the country’s image abroad.

Kubayi made these remarks as the committee updated the nation on actions outlined during President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address earlier this month on migration-related issues.

South Africa’s international reputation under scrutiny following anti-migrant marches

The General Secretary of the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU), Zwelinzima Vavi, has urged South Africans to continue speaking out about the deep social and economic challenges facing black communities more than three decades after the advent of democracy.

Vavi says those promoting the narrative that South Africa is inherently xenophobic are fuelling fear and hostility while diverting attention from the country’s pressing issues, including unemployment, inequality, exploitation and corruption.

His remarks come amid the repatriation of more than 250 Nigerian nationals who reportedly claimed that their lives were under threat in South Africa.

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi met with his Israeli counterpart, Isaac Herzog, in Jerusalem over the weekend during his first official state visit to Israel. The visit comes months after Israel formally recognised Somaliland as an independent state.

Discussions between the two leaders focused on strengthening bilateral relations following Tel Aviv’s recognition of Somaliland. The visit also follows the recent appointment of Israel’s first ambassador to Somaliland, a move reciprocated by Somaliland through the appointment of its own envoy to Israel.

Rwanda has reaffirmed its readiness to prevent any Ebola outbreak from entering the country, despite ongoing cases reported in neighbouring countries, particularly in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and parts of Uganda. 

The Minister of Health outlined the country’s preparedness, border surveillance systems, and offered assurances to both citizens and international investors that Rwanda remains safe and Ebola-free.
