The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU), has condemned the arrest, harassment, intimidation and reported abduction of  Lot Vilakati, General Secretary of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT), along with other public sector union leaders in Eswatini.

 The incident reportedly occurred while these leaders were peacefully delivering a petition to the Prime Minister's Office, which SADTU says is an act that falls squarely within their legitimate democratic and trade union rights.

The African Union (AU) will convene a Strategic AU-G20 Retreat over the next two days in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

The meeting comes amid growing debate over whether the continental body should boycott the upcoming G20 Summit in Miami in solidarity with South Africa (SA), which played a pivotal role in securing the AU's admission into the bloc. The retreat is expected to focus on key issues, including lessons from SA's G20 Presidency, Africa's opportunities and priorities in the context of the 2026 U.S. G20 agenda, the development of a common AU position aligned with Agenda 2063, and strengthening coordination as well as leadership transition within the bloc.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has urged the South African public to avoid using transformer oil or any electrical equipment oil on the body, or for any other non-industrial purposes.

These oils may contain Polychlorinated Biphenyls, which are toxic and pose serious risks to both human health and the environment.

The department says it has observed dangerous misconceptions in some communities, including claims that transformer oil can be used to treat conditions such as arthritis.

It has strongly warned against this practice and has also called on municipal officials not to supply transformer oil to members of the public.

SA public is urged to refrain from using transformer oil on the body

A group identifying itself as the Concerned Citizens and the Voters of SA has called for a nationwide shutdown on Monday, 4 May, demanding the removal of millions of foreign nationals from the country, regardless of their legal status.

This comes amid growing calls from organisations such as Operation Dudula and March and March for the repatriation of foreign nationals.

In KwaZulu-Natal province, several marches have taken place through the Durban CBD, with demonstrators calling for the removal of foreign nationals.

These protests form part of a wider rise in anti-immigrant mobilisation across the province in recent weeks.
