The South African Communist Party (SACP)'s 5th Special National Conference is set to start today. During the conference, the communist party will review its relationship with the African National Congress  (ANC) following its decision to include the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the ANC-led Government of National Unity. A move the SACP said was opposed to the alliance's national programme of action - the National Democratic Revolution. Lulu Gaboo spoke to Political Analyst, Sandile Swana.

The future of the tripartite alliance is under the spotlight at the 5th Special National Conference of the SACP 

Forty-three out of 50 countries and territories in sub-Saharan Africa have restricted or shut down civic spaces.

This is according to a report released by a global alliance of civil society organizations.

The annual report, titled People Power Under Attack 2024, says civic space has improved over the past year in Botswana and Liberia, but gotten worse in Burkina Faso, Eswatini, Ethiopia and Kenya.

According to CIVICUS, which tracks the state of civic freedoms of 198 countries, conditions for civil society have deteriorated over the past year in nine countries, four of which are in Africa, and general civic space conditions in the African continent remain repressive.

Paul Mulindwa is Africa Advocacy lead at CIVICUS, the global civil society alliance, now joins us on the line to discuss this further.
