South Africa's Department of Basic Education is pushing back against claims that foreign learners are overrunning schools, saying the figure is only 1.8% of total enrolment.

The Department calls such assertions "patently false" and an attempt to sow division.

The department says real challenges like infrastructure backlogs and funding constraints are being addressed and schools must remain spaces of inclusion and safety for all.

Addressing the media amid escalating global conflicts, deepening inequality, and intensifying climate disasters, UN Secretary-General António Guterres says the "law of power" is increasingly overriding the "power of law."

Guterres also raised alarm over shrinking humanitarian aid, unchecked technological power, and the accelerating impacts of climate change, warning that the global system for solving shared problems is approaching a critical reckoning.

South Africa has appointed a senior judge to lead an inquiry into allegations that the country's navy ignored instructions from President Cyril Ramaphosa over Iran's participation in a multinational naval exercise.

Former judge Bernard Ngoepe will chair the investigation, which will examine claims that the South African Navy proceeded with Iran's involvement in the Exercise Will for Peace 2026 drills despite presidential concerns.

The exercises were held at Simon's Town, a key naval base near Cape Town, in the country's Western Cape province. The inquiry panel also includes Judges Monica Leeuw and Kathleen Satchwell, as well as Rear Admiral Patrick Duze.

The findings are expected to clarify issues of civilian oversight, military accountability, and South Africa's foreign policy positioning.

The leader of a powerful rebel coalition that includes M23 has sharply criticised a new strategic partnership between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the United States, warning that the deal could be unenforceable in rebel-held territory rich in critical minerals.

In an interview with Reuters, Corneille Nangaa, head of the Alliance Fleuve Congo, described the agreement as unconstitutional, opaque, and legally flawed, raising fresh doubts over US investment plans in eastern Congo, where much of the country's valuable mineral wealth remains under insurgent control.
