The Eastern and Southern Africa region accounts for the largest share of the global burden of HIV among young people and reports some of the highest adolescent pregnancy rates.

Beyond art and innovation, creativity is increasingly being seen as a critical tool for reimagining the future, especially in a rapidly changing world marked by uncertainty, technological disruption and complex global challenges.

Dr Morné Mostert, Strategic Foresight Adviser at Stellenbosch Business School, spoke to Mpho Sithole about why creativity is essential not only for problem‑solving, but also for creating alternative futures, and why, perhaps, the future itself needs to be reinvented.

Calls are growing for South Africa’s Department of Small Business Development to be shut down, amid concerns about its effectiveness in supporting small enterprises and driving economic growth. The Black Business Unity has weighed in on the debate, raising questions about whether the department is delivering on its mandate or whether resources could be better utilised elsewhere. This comes at a time when small businesses continue to face mounting challenges, including access to funding, regulatory hurdles and a tough economic climate.

Tensions between China and Taiwan are once again playing out on African soil after Taiwanese President Lai Ching‑te was forced to cancel a planned visit to eSwatini, one of the few countries that still maintains diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

 

Several African nations reportedly denied overflight access to his aircraft. Taipei has accused Beijing of exerting pressure on countries such as Seychelles, Mauritius and Madagascar, highlighting China’s growing influence across the continent.
