The Electoral Commission in Uganda has released the first preliminary results for the 2026 presidential elections, showing incumbent President Yoweri Museveni with a clear lead over his challengers.

According to the EC, more than 21 million voters were registered for the election, with 50,739 polling stations set up nationwide. As of the first report, results had been received from 133 polling stations, with 23,845 votes counted.

Preliminary results for Uganda's election released

South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the recent floods in Limpopo as catastrophic, with 36 houses damaged in Mbaula village. The province is experiencing widespread flooding, affecting hundreds of families.

The government has deployed multi-disciplinary teams to assist affected areas, including rescue operations and damage assessments. Mozambique is also grappling with heavy rains that continue to wreak havoc.

The country is prone to flooding during this time of the year. Infrastructure has been damaged by torrential rains, and mudslides has affected some residential areas. The SA Weather Service has issued a level 10 warning for Limpopo in SA, with further heavy rainfall expected. 

Lulu Gaboo spoke to Lehlohonolo Thobela, a meteorologist at the SA Weather Service.

Demonstrators have gathered outside the United States Consulate on Sandton Drive in they city of Johannesburg, South Africa (SA),  in solidarity with the people of Venezuela and Palestine calling for a stop to what they say is the US's imperialism.

The protest brings together people from a wide range of backgrounds, including civic, student, academic and faith-based organizations, trade unions and political activists.

Polling stations in several parts of Uganda reportedly opened late due to undelivered ballot papers and biometric machines not working. Despite an internet shutdown crowds gathered outside polling stations expressing concerns over the delays.

There is also reports of a heavy security presence in the capital Kampala.
