Police in Kenya have blockaded major roads to Nairobi Police in Kenya have blocked major roads leading to Nairobi and heavily restricted vehicle traffic, as the country braces for protests to mark the anniversary of pro-democracy rallies today.

Activists rally each year on July 7th  to mark the date in 1990 when opponents of then-president Daniel Arap Moi, launched a bid to transform the country into a multiparty democracy.

The protest is called "Saba Saba", "seven seven" in Kiswahili, because of the date.

Meanwhile, an armed gang reportedly attacked the headquarters of the Kenyan Human Rights Commission on Sunday,  as it hosted a press conference calling for an end to state violence.
