Namibia's SWAPO cements of 34-year hold onto power

Human Rights Watch says thousands of refugees and asylum-seeking children in Egypt are out of school, this is due to significant bureaucratic registration barriers and a lack of free and publicly available education in the country.

The organisation has called on the Egyptian authorities to remove the barriers keeping refugee and asylum-seeking children out of school and it has also called on humanitarian funding for education for refugees in Egypt.

Refugees and asylum-seeking children in Egypt refused access to education

Fighting erupted once again in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Monday, violating a ceasefire agreement between the M23 rebel group and the Congolese army.

This renewed violence raises concerns about whether the M23 will halt its offensive following the withdrawal of Rwandan troops.

Both DRC and the United Nations have accused neighbouring Rwanda of supporting the rebels by providing troops a claim Rwanda denies.

The Congolese and Rwandan presidents are due to meet on December 15.

Kenyan President William Ruto last Saturday announced that he and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni would lead the mediation process between Ethiopia and Somalia in a dispute that threatens to destabilise the Horn of Africa region. Landlocked Ethiopia, which has thousands of troops in Somalia to fight al Qaeda-linked insurgents, has angered the Mogadishu government with its plan to build a port in the breakaway region of Somaliland, which in exchange for the port could gain possible recognition as an independent nation from Ethiopia. Somaliland has struggled to gain international recognition despite governing itself and enjoying comparative peace and stability since declaring independence in 1991.
