The high court in Johannesburg, South Africa has sentenced a mother of a toddler to 25 years in prison and her boyfriend has been handed life imprisonment.

24-year old Rochelle Both and her 37-year-old boyfriend Stefan van Niekerk were found guilty of the murder of 2-year-old Chevonne Rusch.

The court heard how the pair beat the toddler to death at their home in the east of Johannesburg. A postmortem report found 49 wounds and bruises on Chevonne's body.
