A Kenyan court has convicted controversial preacher Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and 28 co-accused of murdering 191 people in the 2023 Shakahola forest tragedy.

The High Court in Mombasa ruled that the prosecution had proved its case over the deaths of 190 children and one adult.

Kenyan court convicts cult leader Mackenzie of 191 murders in Shakahola tragedy

The City of Tshwane in South Africa's (SA) Gauteng province has suspended water supply from the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works following a gastrointestinal illness outbreak that has affected more than 400 residents, mostly children under the age of four.

The Department of Water and Sanitation says the municipality failed to chlorinate the water for three weeks, from 24 September to 14 October, due to a dispute with its chlorine supplier. Meanwhile, WaterCAN says at least six criminal cases have been opened involving the city's wastewater infrastructure, raising concerns about accountability and the deterioration of water and sanitation services in the capital.

SA halts Bronkhorstspruit water plant after gastrointestinal illness outbreak

Human Rights Watch (HRW) says the Malian military, armed groups and insurgent forces have committed serious violations of the laws of war since July 2026, while the international community has largely failed to act.

The organisation says the military and its Russian-controlled Africa Corps, formerly the Wagner Group, have killed and wounded scores of civilians in attacks and in custody. Drone strikes and resulting civilian casualties also more than doubled between April and August compared with the same period last year.

HRW reports severe war violations in Mali since July 2026

Africa's certification as free of wild poliovirus remains one of the continent's most significant public-health achievements. However, variant polioviruses continue to be detected in several countries, underscoring the need for sustained vigilance, strong immunisation systems and rapid outbreak response.

 The Africa Regional Certification Commission (ARCC) for Polio Eradication is convening its 36th annual meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa to assess the surveillance, immunisation and response systems required to protect children and preserve Africa's wild polio-free status.
