Researchers at South Africa's (SA), Stellenbosch University  found first evidence of rare phenolic compounds in Cannabis leaves.

Phenolic compounds are sought after in the pharmaceutical industry for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic properties. The researchers identified 79 phenolic compounds in three strains of Cannabis grown commercially in SA, of which 25 were reported for the first time in Cannabis.

Professor  André de Villiers at the Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science at Stellenbosch University, spoke to Channel Africa News reporter, Thuto Ngobeni.

Evidence of rare phenolic compounds found in Cannabis leaves

A Kenyan court has ordered the temporary suspension of a plan for the United States to set up an Ebola quarantine facility in the country after a lawsuit argued that the site could endanger public health.

This follows reports that Nairobi had given written approval for the United States to establish an Ebola quarantine facility for Americans exposed to the outbreak centred in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), drawing sharp criticism from health practitioners’ organisations.

These include the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), which says the move risks the country’s biosecurity and the safety of its citizens in exchange for foreign aid.

Kenyan court suspends plan for US Ebola quarantine facility

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, is in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to demonstrate support for the country as it responds to the ongoing deadly Ebola outbreak. The visit comes as the WHO, in partnership with the DRC’s national medical research organisation, scales up Ebola diagnostic capacity nationwide to help contain the outbreak more effectively.

Dr Tedros says the initiative aims to strengthen laboratory networks to provide real-time data, quickly identify confirmed cases, and ultimately save lives.

The three-day East and Southern Africa Sub-Regional Mental Health Inter-Country Learning Workshop is underway in Johannesburg, South Africa. The meeting is convened by the World Health Organisation’s Regional Office for Africa in collaboration with participating member states.

Countries are sharing experiences and achievements in mental health and documenting best practices ahead of the 7th Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit, scheduled to take place in Kigali, Rwanda, in October this year.
